Go south for the deep swiss cheese. I'm running from St Pete to Sarasota on Monday to avoid the zoo on Sunday. The wrecks are more likely to produce gags which don't open till July

Black and red grouper DOES open April 1st, but....Monroe County anglers, check your regs before you go.

Gag Grouper does NOT open Sunday in the Gulf.

The only areas gags will open is up in the panhandle. In the rest of the Gulf, we have to wait until July 1st (through October)

http://myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/r.../gulf-grouper/

Gag Grouper Commission Update:

Gulf: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission adopted new management measures for Gulf of Mexico gag grouper at the February 2012 Commission meeting.

The following changes have been adopted:

Setting the recreational open season from July 1 through Oct. 31 (except for state waters off of Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson and Taylor counties including all waters of Apalachiocola Bay and Indian Pass, including those in Gulf County, and all waters of the Steinhatchee River, including those in Dixie County.)..

Lowering the minimum commercial size limit from 24 inches to 22 inches total length

The Commission also determined that an April 1, 2012, through June 30, 2012, gag grouper harvest season was warranted in the state waters off Taylor, Jefferson, Wakulla and Franklin counties, including all waters of Apalachicola Bay, Indian Pass and the Steinhatchee River. This area of state waters will be closed to recreational gag grouper harvest for the remainder of the year.

The smaller size limit will not allow commercial fishermen to harvest more fish because gag grouper is on a quota system, meaning only a certain number of fish can be harvested. The smaller size limit will decrease the amount of fish deaths.

I'm sorry that you posted that...because what you just posted is for GAG GROUPER ONLY.......

Look at the FWC site again. Look at the red grouper and black grouper regulations. Those fish are in season starting APRIL 1ST.....

Yeah, I know a 20" red grouper can be a little hard to find sometimes, but that is why Jack Hester posted to look for hard bottom, swiss cheese as they call it; because that holds more red grouper than wrecks, etc....

This chart is a little easier to read..

I just wonder how many anglers will get citations from FWC for keeping Gag's, thinking that "Grouper Opens Sunday", and not realizing that Gags remain closed?

Or better yet, how many won't get caught keeping gag. while we sit and wait till July others are catching and keeping the whole time...

I found the update on gags after I posted. Sounds like they are trying to wait until the gags get so far off shore that only the commercial guys can get to them. Thanks for the heads up though.
They should not be allowed to change the regs for a year after the FWC book is published.

What about the Federal waters (9miles out)? Can we take gags there on Sunday?

The bolded part is an excellent point. I picked up a couple of reg books last week at Sports Authority, and they still list Gags as opening April 1st. Anyone picking up those books is going to think season is indeed reopening this weekend.

Nope. Not until July. The only place its opening Sunday is in some state watersoff the panhandle in the counties listed in my post above (according to the FWC site, which is confusing as ass hell)

oh well!! I'll play with the kings then if I can't get a decent red after a few hours. Wonder what they are going to change for red snapper this year? They will probably cancel the season a few days before it opens and right after I get all my gear set for them.lol

I'll be out there. The only plus is now you can keep 4 red grouper, I dont mind the run out as much.
Red snapper is already only a 45 day season so I certainly hope the only change they make to that is to increase it. On top if that, there are only 15 days that gag and red snapper are open at the same time BUT AJ's are closed!

Are the AJs open this weekend? I wouldn't mind adding one to the grill.

I took some friends spearfishing on a wreck this past saturday. I went down with one of them and it was loaded with gags in the range of 27'-34"ish inches. I had to clear my mask because it was filling full of tears.. Im debating on fishing or spearing them on sunday. Might just have to do both..
