Default avet sx 5.3

my son purchased a avet 5.3 and is looking for recommendations for a quality rod and also what type of braid to go with. he wanted a reel that was american made and could be used for different applications. it is lever drag and capable of 14lbs of drag at max. we fish out of chincoteague virginia on the wrecks, troll offshore, work the lobsterballs for mahi and also jig for seabass.

Shimano, Penn, G Loomis, or a custom.. Depending on the size of the fish you target, I would do anything from 40-65 Jerry brown.

Good luck with the new reel.

I have 3 of the Avet reels on BP Offshore live bait Kingfish rods.

This is mostly what I use them for and I like the aluminum mounting handles for the reels over graphite ones

So far so good, have had them on there for two seasons

My 10 year old has one mounted on a cheap 7 foot Kingfish rod. When money allows I am gonna get him a rod from Connley rods. We saw Brian and Harold last weekend at the Miami show and they showed us a great rod for both my son's. He has great prices and can put your son's name on the rod too.

I like the Shimano Trevala rods for those reels. The TVC66M would be perfect for that reel. It is rated for 30-80# braid. I've got the 50-100 on my MXL and its a perfect combo. I use it for bottom fishing, wrecks, jigging stripers and blues and even trolling and jigging tuna.
