How much grease is too much?

I bought a couple used Shimano Spheros 4000 spinning reels. When I got them one of the reels turned a little hard. I took it apart and the compartment was absolutely filled with grease. I assume that this is not the correct way to lubricate a reel. ;?

What parts should be lubricated and how much grease should be applied?

Until grease is pouring out...but then again I work for a grease company :Q

In all seriousness, for most bearings and mechanical devices a 20% fill should be enough. You want enough to leave a good film but not to create viscous drag. I would clean the reel out and fill it roughly 20% evenly spaced out and then operate the reel for several rotations and then open it back up and check the coating.

I understand what you are saying but why don't new reels come packed with grease?

Because too much grease hampers the ability of gears to perform smoothly-simple resistance.

Filling the compartment 20% full sounds like more than you should use in most cases, too. Usually you just want a light coating. But, don't take my word for it, google Alan Tani's website and watch a few of his reel repair videos.
He da man!!

The compartment was completely full on these reels! I thought this was a little over the top.

I would think any grease that you can see is not doing anything and should be eliminated. Just my opinion.
