Panama City Offshore Fishing

I am going to panama for a week in june and wanted to pull my 23ft cc down and do some offshore fishing. Really looking to do some kingfish and some dolphin.

Question,

how far offshore do oyu have to go to begin trolling for these. I have been looking and it seems like its not very far offshore and maybe only a 1/4mile from shore?? Would love some advice on places start methods and etc.
I am usually out of south carolina coast and sure things are a little different in the gulf.

Next questions is about best place to put boat in, ramp or preferabbly a boat lift. Also good tavkle shops for live and dead baits, are there any live bait sellers on the water/bay.

Thanks guys

The month of June the king fishing fires up good. They are easy to catch just troll a duster with cigar minnow attached and troll over any in shore reefs. You will ctach the schoolies this way if the want the larger kings most time just a live cigar over the same reefs. And you can fish for them from about 1/4 mile out to about 10 miles, but most stay within about 5 miles of shore. Best boat ramp IMO is State Park, there is also one on dophlin drive they are both off of Thomas drive. Best tackle shop of fishing info. is Half Hitch Tackle also on Thomas drive. In June you should be able to Live Bait from one of the bait boats at deep water point or just out the PC pass they are on CH#11 Good luck, IM if you need any more help.

Great, how about dead cigar minnows? any luck with those, and i saw on Half Tackle, they have the reefs listed, i see there are tons, any suggestions on which ones?

Also, how about dolphin, read somewhere that the chicken can be caught near shore also, what do you use for those, skirted bally?

thanks so much for the info

Yes dead cigar will work when they are thick. BTW i am a all out offshore fisherman so haven't really did much trolling in the last ten years but you can check these spots used to be good. Whistle Buoy 3m, Stage 2 2.5m, Black Bart 4m, Liberty Ship 6m, USS Chippewa 10m, War Saw site 6m., these are ones that that seems good if i remember correctly miles might be off a little but shouldn't be to far off. The schoolie dolphin don't come in until the end of June anywhere you find a patch of grass their should be phins most are out 10 miles +.

BTW pin the cigar minnow to your duster, drop in water beside boat make sure duster and cigar runs straight if it spins rehook the cigar minnow. The king won't hit it spinning also troll as slow as your boat will allow you just bump motor in gear. Also while trolling switch clicker to on loosen drag until line stay on reel. When reel screams just pick up rod tighten drag and fish is hooked up no hook setting needed. Also Red Snapper will opens June 1 and there will be keeper red snapper on most all inshore reefs (Red Snapper fishing in the PH last year was awesome)hope this help

Warsaw hole is good for king trolling. If you have a downrigger bring it.

When you get there go to half hitch or howell tackle and buy some black "destin doll's". Make sure the bait doesn't spin!!!

When you pull up to the bait boat look in the tank for big hardtails and tell them you want big hardtails. That is what catches the bigger kings.

You can also just pull out and troll parallel to the beach the kings will be every where . . .

Go out to the bridge spans about 13 miles out for your snapper etc.

If you can get to the Fontainebleu area right at daylight there is usually AJ's there (need live bait). Sometimes they are right on the surface.

Head over to 3 -5 miles south of Phillip's Inlet there is some good bottom over there and there can be red snapper all through the water column. They are big ones.

Have fun.

These guys are spot on JT. The only thing I have to add is to stop in Half Hitch and buy 5 sabiki rigs, probably the smaller ones in early June. Put a two ounce pyramid sinker on the bottom of it, and put that on some small spinning gear. Stop at the second bouy on your right after you clear the pass and drop the sabikis right next to the bouy. Let em hit the bottom and jig until you feel the bait. It shouldn't take long to have all the great bait you need. This works best right after daybreak. With good bait and fishing around the warsaw, I guarantee some kings. My bet is you won't catch any dolphin unless you run offshore and look for some weeds, but I've caught them in the pass before, so anything can happen.

i appreciate it tons!!! Only thing i need now is to figure how long its gonna take to get the boat from SC to panama, sure is a long drive but sounds like the fishing and boating will be well worth it!!!!

BTW where is the pass, i assume thats the channel out to the deep water (aka jetties)
Also, i see a few reef #'s for the Warsaw, is any fine or one in particular, i assume they are all within a small distance of each other?

Stingwray, will hollar if i see you out, it will be the first week in June we will be coming down for the week.

thanks agian guys

I have done very well on kings by putting out dusters/cigar minnows and a deep diving plug down the middle. We used to troll straight out the bouy line and kill the kings. I have even picked up dolphin and wahoo pretty close in. There should still be some Cobies around as well. Also, if you can get numbers for Leroy (20+/-) miles out, you may get a shot at some BFT. We used to chum Menhanden Milk out there and round up the BFT like crazy. There used to be some quality snapper and large grouper on that wreck as well. If you head east toward Mexico Beach, you can get into lots of red grouper. Some of the above listed numbers are good advice. I have seen some very nice snapper and red grouper caught off of Philips Inlet on natural bottom. It is not far offshore there either. you can literally seen people walking on the beach. Like they said above, Half Hitch is a great place to start. Definately launch at St. Andrews State Park. Very short run to the pass. We got this hoo about 9 miles out of the pass. Good luck!

when you say troll straight out the bouys line, what do you mean by that, never been to Panama City so consider me a rookie!!

thanks

Too much drag for trebles.

Tip a 1 1/2 oz bucktail jig with a cigar minnow next time. Catches plenty of fish, won't pull as easy and is easier on the fish you release. A trailer hook is not necessary unless you are in a tournament, IMO.
