Default getting baits down

I tried using a planer off the downrigger while trolling but the rubber band always failed. I also have a z wing that I deploy off 400 lb mono and shower rings but they don't always reach the z wing. I don't want the inconvenience of a planer on the line after hook up. i do have trolling sinkers but they don't seem to get deep enough. Any suggestions?

Use a piece of wire (mouse trap) as your lever to signal a knock down. It will hold while trolling and give way when there is a fish on.

I think I misread the question. A planer off the stern tied with a smaller rope should get your baits down.

we use the big paper clips. attach to the line and it will go down and break when
you get a hook up.
