Default Livewell water flow - which direction?

Is the water in the livewell supposed to flow clockwise or counter-clockwise in the tank? I heard once that the direction would be one way north of the Equator, and the other way south of the Equator. Supposedly, water going down the drain will always swirl in the same direction, depending on where you are on earth. Will baitfish even care which way the water is flowing?

counterclockwise.

Traveller - it depends on what you are referring to. Like a sink or bathtub a home if you have a sink, tub, or baitwell full of water and pull the plug to let it drain, it will flow out in as Tsunami says, a clockwise direction. If you were south of the equator it would flow out counterclock wise.

However, it you are asking in what direction your input hose should be pointed to allow the freshwater to flow clockwise or counterclock wise, the answer is that it makes no difference.

Why would it make a difference which way the water was flowing as long as it's flowing? It's not like the fish can only turn in one direction.

The clockwise vs. counterclockwise draining is a popular myth:

Now as to whether a certain type of biai would prefer one to the other...I have no idea...

No myth, flow is directed due to Coriollis (not spelled right) effect. It controls ocean currents and wind. Clockwise around high pressure, CCW around lows. Direction of flow prolly doesn't make too much difference in livewell, but if you want to 'go with the flow', it would depend on where your drain is. Maybe.

The last couple of responses are correct. Those who said clockwise have no idea why they said that. I fish on a couple of boats who use enoumous amounts of live bait and on two of the boats the livewell water is plumbed into the livewell at an angle that makes it flow counterclockwise while on the third it flows clockwise, and it makes no differrence to the bait which way the water is flowing in any of these boats.

Forget clockwise or counter. Flow from bottom up to keep contaminate from bottom of tank. Amonia (sp) is right there next to lack of O2 for killing baits. Other option is to drain water partially during day from bottom.

My pref. is what bigbite said. However, mine is plumbed to pump straight in at the top and drain from the bottom (standpipe system). Keeps bait very well.

Thanks for the responses and debate over the direction of current in the livewell. I primarily try to keep pogies (menhadden) alive during kingfish tournaments. They tend to die at the least bit of stress. The livewell I had in the floor of the boat (the one I posted about that broke off the bottom of the deck and almost swamped my boat!) was a pogy death trap. Mullet, sardines, cigar minnows, blue runners, etc, all enjoyed it okay, but pogies keeled over in about an hour. Will let everyone know how the new well does when I stick some pogies in it in June.
