Default Penn 525 Mag

Anyone use this reel and if so how do you like it? I was thinking about picking up one for Blackfishing during the cold months and all around bottom reel, but also using it as a baitcaster for bluefish, stripers, false albacore, etc. It holds 275 of 15# mono (but I would put on braid), 6-1 retrieve, and costs under $150. Any opinions? Thanks - Glen

I use one size larger. It's good for king fishing with the fast retrieve but not sure how good it would be for your application. The drag on it can't really pull that much weight for bottom fishing unless your pulling smaller fish.

The Mag series was made more for casting, not the best bottom reel around. Better off with an Penn 975 for a combo reel, be it a levelwind or even open top...

I have one that has the mag upgrade from hatteras outfitters and it is by far the best surf casting reel I have ever used, I have never used it to bottom fish with on the boat but I know it can't be beat when casting plugs to schooling spanish, blues, and rockfish.

Penn 525MAG is my favorite all time reel. I use it for surf. I would have to agree with the post above, if you wont be using it for surf, spend a little more and get 975.

I only use mine for surf fishing. Great reel though.
I could see putting it on a casting boat rod to throw metal and lures.

I have one in the same family, the 535.
This reel has landed wahoo, sailfish, bluefish, striped bass, dolphin, among other less gamey species.
The thing won't die. I do admit to cleaning it once a year and adding lube.

On a rampage... I use the 525MAG and the 555 for exactly what you are going to use it for. From seabass and scup, a bit oversized but fine really in my mind. Use it on tautog, cod, dolphin, striped bass, etc. I have had them for probably as long as they have been out. We use them on the charter boat and they get beat up without any issues. I think the biggest issue I have seen with them is keeping the screw tight on the free spool, not sure if this is just on the 555. The thing I've seen people do is when this becomes lose, its hard to put into free spool and people break it off. Once I saw it happen once, just a dab of green loctite and something I watch time to time...

I have a couple of 525's and they are great casting reals with a nice drag. I caugh alot of big red drum, small bluefins and even big cobia. They are made with alot of plastic though and both of mine are sitting in a bucket in my closet with the rest of my old reels that are no longer worth fixing. For your application i would recomend an Avet reel, either there SX or MJX, They are great simple reels that with some maintence should last forever.

I was hoping to do this new "tog plus all purpose" reel on a bit more of a budget, so I'm not looking for an avet or a Penn 965. It may be a waste of great casting ability to use for bottom fishing, but I would use it for alot of other types of fishing through out the year. Is there any reason why this couldn't be used as an effective tog reel? ie too heavy, to fast a retrieve, too big, etc, etc?

I think its a great little reel. I use two on my boat, and have had them for more than 10 years, still going strong as long as you take care of them. Have caught everything from snapper and grouper to macs, dolphin, and sailfish. My only concern is line capacity. Although backed with spectra, still too small to bottom fish deep.

Had one for awhile. Really prefer the ABUs myself. Possibly because I'm used to the feel.
I do a lot of night fishing for the stripers. I was more comfortable with what I was used to. Ended up trading for a 6500 mag.
Penn is definately a good reel and well built. Prob was more with me, not the reel.

I have one and use a 535, 545 and 555. The 525 mag is my favorite and I have 30lbs braid on it. I use it for bottom fishing for white snapper, bee liners and other bottom fish in the GOM. I don't surf fish only boat fishing in 100 to 200 foot water. I don't have any time using other brand reels in this class so I can't give you a comparision.
