Default Penn International II 30TW 2 speed

I just bought a 30TW on Ebay. It was listed as a 2 speed reel and the pictures confirmed it. I won the bid and just got the reel. It is indeed a 2 speed and it is marked 30TW which would make it a single speed reel. The serial # denotes that the reel was built in 1989. Has anyone ever heard or seen one of these. If it is an aftermarket conversion it is good. I have several 30SW's and this reel is identical except for the Model designation on the reel.

I understand how the VIN and HID work but what number on the serial denotes the year the reel was made?

maybe two possibilities. one, somebody have a two speed reel, the frame was damaged and the owner installed a new single speed frame. they're the same size. two, you have a reel that started out life as a single speed and it was shipped to cal sheets for two speeding and maybe even blue printing. let's hope for the second case. i think you got one hellava reel!

Alan would know for sure but as I understand it the 1st 2 numbers of the serial number are the year of manufacture on the International II's.

The reel came from California so I am hoping for the second. The reel appears to have a lot more drag on it than my others. If I tighten the pre-set knob you cannot pull any drag at the strike position. It appears to be a very solid reel. I can't wait to use it.

Sounds like your 30TW has a Cal's 2-Speed conversion. To confirm it, remove the left side-plate. Inside, there should be a sticker from Cal noting the work done and date.

I pulled off the side-plate. No sticker but everything was clean and looked to have been recently lubed with blue grease. Thanks for all the advice. I can't wait to put it to use.

The first two numbers of the serial number are indeed the year of manufacture. The first letter is the month of manufacture (i.e. Jan=A, Feb=B, etc...)

Did they use a code to denote the work done? Something like

R
A
L

? Initials for work done in a vertical position? Written on masking tape?

There wasn't any kind of a sticker or masking tape at all.
