Default Chum Balls

I have never used the large chum balls, (the ones wrapped in plastic and netting)
Can anyone tell me how these are used? Are the thawed and used or are they tied off and used as they come packaged? Any information will be appreciated.

I freeze all my chum hard as a rock and then put it in a mesh bag either on the surface or on the downrigger. It will disolve slowly when frozen!! We also freeze it in plastic softdrink bottles then punch holes in them.
