Default What to fish for in Florida

The kids are out of college, I'll be ordering my new boat soon (I hope). 26 triton w t/F200's. I like salmon and muskie fishing in the great lakes basically because it's the biggest fish we have here. The salmon (mature fish) smoke line from a reel and the muskies just sit there and dare you to give em your best.

the move to Florida is a possibility in the near future.. her parents live there and I'm sick of the cold. What kind of fish do I go after?...preferably the ocean kind. Been Grouper fishing once and that's one tough fish. What are your favorite fish to target?

Grouper snapper amberjacks cobia kingfish, wahoo tuna dolphin sailfish marlin spanish mackerl bonita and many more. You target types of fish down here. Bottom fish and pelagics.
You can catch any of them while fishing. That is the good part.

One day we counted over 50 species of fish you can catch with a single bait.

It is not unusual for us to catch 10-15 types of fish on a single trip. Some are not good for much except bait, and others are delicious.

You will have a blast fishing down here

If fishing is your passion, you will love Florida! Waaaay too many species to list on a forum. I fished last Friday and we caught 9 different species in that day alone.
I might caution you on one thing tho. I would NOT pull the trigger on a new boat until I got settled in here. You may very well find you want something totally different once you are here. I would HIGHLY recommend renting next winter for 3 or 4 months, bring your boat, then you will have a much better idea what suits you. Not only that, but there's always a deal on whatever it is somewhere down here, likely near wherever you stay.

Alot depends on which coast you fish. West coast is wreck/bottom fishing, and fishing mangroves/'glades. East coast coast you can do this as well, but you get the added thrill of pelagics. Either way, you're still only a couple hours from either coast.

The Triton would work fine down here, you can hunt Palagics on the West side too, just a farther run, the good thing is there is 50 miles of Grouper bottom on your way in and out on the West side, I catch Dolphin, tuna,Kingfish, snapper,AJ's,Cobia,Redfish,S nook, trout,Grouper,Shark and many others.

I got sucked in to moving to FL after visiting my grandparents on the West Coast of Fl about 10 years ago. I moved to the East side and there is no way I could move to the West side now. 50 miles here and your in the Bahamas. Less than 5 miles to Sailfish and Dolphin and Wahoo. Some areas can claim less than a mile to the same species. It is paradise! At least on the weekends it is!
