Default Halibut jig suggestions

I am planning a trip to Quatsino Sound this summer for salmon, rockfish and halibut and hope that anyone with halibut experience up this way can suggest some good jigs.

Is it a good idea to run mono leader between the lure and braid-type main line, to break a little easier in case of hangups? I plan on using 50 or 80 lb test Power Pro or Tuf Line.

Default RE: Halibut jig suggestions

When I fish for halibut, I usually have 3-4 rods running bait (usually herring) and run a couple rods with jigs. The scent from the bait brings in the fish, and the jigs provide sound & vibration. This is a very effective strategy for halibut. I have also noticed the the larger fish hit the jigs.

My favorite halibut jigs are 16oz white-colored jig heads with an 8" Berkely Power Grub (white or glow color). Make sure you bring LOTS of Power Grubs. They are rather fragile and need to be replaced fairly often, but they are simply the best thing going.

I have also used metal jigs for hailbut, and they are certainly more durable, but I catch many more fish with the soft jigs.
