Most of our fishing is done with 20 Lb tackle on 7' rods, so the 6-1/2 footer is usable. We are usually targeting Mahi and Kings off the North Carolina coast. On the occassions that we venture out to the Gulf Stream, we switch over to 30 and 50 Lb tackle on 6 to 6-1/2 stand-up rods. It is as much a matter of personal opinion as anything. Just try to match your tackle to the quarry you're after. The shorter rods, down to 5-1/2 feet, do seen to handle somewhat better on a boat than the longer ones, but then tey tend to be much stiffer.

Woodville,

If you'll specify where you plan to fish, what you plan to fish for, and what line weights you plan to use on the 4/0s, you could probably get some more meaningful feedback. I would say that the 6 to 6-1/2 rods are generally about right for the 4/0s. Good luck

I like just roller butts and roller tips on my 30# outfits, so I tend to stick with fiberglass or "Uglystick" blanks. Now that may not be your choice. 6.5 are fine. Shorter is good if you're doing stand-up.

If using them for big spoons on wire line, you'll need longer rods. Closer to 8' and longer is preferred. Otherwise, the size you mentioned is commonly used.
