A few reasons we did it. We did alot of light trolling Kings small dolphin etc. I started offshore fishing and it was much cheaper to upgrade the six reels then to buy Six new reels. It cost me 35.00 dollars a reel when I did the upgrade that was a total of $210. That is cheap compare to six new reels. Now if you do it yourself Alans price for parts is only $57 a reel and $346 for six. That made more economical sense. I used the set of six for 3 years offshore before I bought my new set of offshore reels. I still have the TLDs and plan on keeping them great reels you can do just about everything with the TLD 25 when you are starting out....Mark
Well, if you're considering the price of upgrading current tackle versus buying new tackle, I definitely see the value in upgrading them... I meant more along the lines of buying a new TLD and upgrading it versus buying a stock SLD... In your case, it certainly makes sense to upgrade older reels than to buy all new ones...

I don't mean to flog a dead horse, but it has come up several times... WHAT is the hard part about the Daiwas? I mean, its just a reel. Nuts 'n' bolts 'n' gears. Not exactly a jet plane, even if servicing a jet plane is easy too if you know how. Or did they put it together with one-way screws?

i was trying like hell to get the strike drag increased from 17#'s to 30#'s and still get good freespool. i just couldn't get it right. i think i spend 3 days working on it. really frustrating. the other thing is the dark red drag material. do you know what that stuff is? alan

you know, doc, you're right. i really should go back and look at those. it's IS just a fishing reel, after all. can't possibly be that hard. actually, the hard part will be finding one. i don't know of anyone locally that owns one of these reels. they just never got very popular in these parts. hey, i finally opened up a torque. very nice reel and easy to work on. next time i'll have to take a few pictures. alan

Hey Alantani,

What kind of drag washers are actually in the recent Tyrnos single speed 30's? You said once above that you "thought" they were a "white canvas drag washer" like found in some TLD's.

WE ALL would like to know for sure.

No way could a Daiwa SLD be as complicated internally as a Shimano Thunnus. No way, I refuse to believe it...

i just put a call into shimano (877-577-0600) and the guy said that all of the drag washers in both single and two speed tyrnos reels is carbon fiber. i dread calling because sometimes you get left on hold, but this time i got straight through! alan

Just bought two of the the SLD 30 2spds but haven't used yet. Although not proven yet like the TLD, I was impressed with a hands on comparison.

I visited a nearby Outdoor World over the weekend and compared the Tyrnos 30 to the TLD 30II. Really not much of a comparison; the Tyrnos is just a more modern, improved reel. Definitely beefier, faster gear ratio, longer handle to offset the torque lost with the high ratio, and very smooth. They didn't have a SLD and said they won't stock them...demonstrates Alantani's point about the Daiwa being hard to find.

As an update to a way old thread......my SLD-30II's are still going strong with zero maintenance and zero problems. I take care of 'em, a light FW washdown, a little corrosionx, wipe down, thats it. I like them much better than the TLD-30 2's. Trying to find more daiwas, about 260 for new ones on ebay, more than I'm willing to pay though.
