Default Costa Del Mar - Bad Service!!!!

I usually don't bring up service issues online......BUT......

Here is the deal, I have been wearing Costa's for about 12 years now in my charter business. I found some I liked, so I bought two pairs. Costa waves with the blue lens.

A few years ago during the winter, I walked out to my car, put on my glasses and noticed the lens had cracked overnight. Sent them back....$65 to fix. So much for warranty, but I chalked it up to cold weather and put it behind me.

Last week I went to pull a pair out of my captains bag, again lens cracked. Now these were in a case inside a padded bag. They said something must have happened to them, because they were scratched. No way!

Futhermore, I know for sure there was not one single scratch on them, and they were saying there was. The len's of both pairs are perfect. I would not stand for less.

This bill was $72, which I did not pay. I will get them back, and post pictures of the cracked lens(no scratches) and send a note to the owner of Costa, explaining the concept of customer service.

NEVER AGAIN....will I buy another pair of Costa Del Mar sunglasses! I would not recommend them this brand due to extremely POOR customer service.

Oakley does the same. They question you until you give in and pay. No freebees. If its a manufacturer's defect then you must have solid proof that there wasn't anything wrong when you bought it and until that year is up. Anything after the 1 year warranty, oh well... if you really love it and its expensive enough, have it repaired.

I have nothing but praise for Smith/Action Optics. I have used Smith Snow Goggles for 15 years, 7 as a pro ski patroller and thier sunglasses for at least that long both fishing and on the snow. Very friendly, helpful and fast customer serivce. I use nothing else.

I'll be waiting to see what happens to me. I ordered a pair of Costa's (Brine style) from my Optomatrist a six weeks ago (with a prescription). Not inexpensive by any means, but my insurance picked up 50% of the bill. When I ordered them, I asked the Dr. if my script would be compatable with the frames and he assured me they would.

Picked up the glass three weeks ago and they're unusable. The Dr said that my eyes would have to "adjust" to the curvature of the lense, as it was very different from what I had previously (Action Optics Tailwaters). I had never heard of such a thing, but tried them. I can't read the gas prices at the gas station with them one, let alone the license plate of the cars in traffic in front of me. Needless to say, I only drove with them once and limited my "break-in" to the backyard. BTW, my conventional prescription corrects my eyes to 20/15, so it's not that.

I'm returning them tomorrow. It should be interesting to hear what he says. Since he guarantees his work and Costa has a life time guarantee as well, I expect no questions asked and I'll be going back to Smith Optics/Action Optics.

Oh well....

That is what they advertise, but not what they do. Anyone know a good lawyer in Florida that would like to take on a class action suit against a major sunglasses manufacturer???

The Costa Del Mar warranty is absolutely worthless. In my opinion, Smiths are less money for a better quality product with a much better warranty (they will replace just about anything). For a little bit better pair of shades, I have been very pleased with my Maui Jims as well - comparable to Costa's Wave 580 lens in quality, but again, less money.

Costas are great, and their lens are superior to anything I've tried. I don't believe their lens just crack for no apparent reason. And to suggest a class action suit just tells me your a ja with too much time on your hands. Go fishing.

Disagree. Had three pairs since 1999. All three have had problems. Wife's $14.00 pair of polarized glasses bought at a Circle K have lasted longer than any of my Costa Del Mar.

I have personally had three pair of Costas since 1996 and my first pair was eaten by my dog, ( then I bought a set of Oakleys, MISTAKE ) CAUSE THEY WERE CHEAPER. Got my second pair of Costas in 2000 and they lasted until 2005 until they were steped on and now on my third pair, Harpoons. I love them. Cant comment on customer service or warranty issues, never needed it. I also have never seen a lens just " crack " for no reason, regardless of manufacturer. Class Action suit Not even gonna go there Anyway, good luck.

And I thought this was going to be a positive thread......
Anyways, since I'm here already, I bought a pair of Costa Del Mar Turbines a couple years ago, poor frame design, the molded nose piece came unglued near the bottom and made cleaning them with a cloth difficult, pointy rubber edges always catching on something, like a hangnail. I read on here about someone with similar issues sending them in for replacements, but I didn't have the receipt, or the box, plus I'm lazy. Bought the Maui Jims a few weeks back, sent the Costa's back for kicks, one week later I had maybe the old blue lenses, but in brand new frames. I say good customer service. And I'm not buying lenses just crack overnight, try a hard case for your next pair......

I had the same problem with Costas as well. Told them to keep them and then bought Maui Jims. No problems in 5 years with the Maui's!! Mark

Oh ya, frames so similar to the Maui's with the little rubber insert by the nose, I'm wondering if both companies buy their frames from the same place! Or just good copywriting, I mean copying practices

The lenses on my first pair of Costas delaminated and Academy gave me my money back no questions asked. On the pair I have now, the black paint is chipping off. I'll probably keep this pair as a back up and try Ocean Waves. I don't hear many bad things about Ocean Waves or Maui Jims. Costas....though I love how they work and look, will never buy them again due to quality issues.

i have the mirrored costas and the mirror is peeling away. it looks like ludicrous pair (from what i can tell in the pic). its so bad you can barely see through the lens any more. My brother has the same glasses (we bought at the same time) and his are doing the same thing.

I am in the process of sending them back. from what i have read, it depends what mood the person is when you send your pair back. hopefully it works out for me.

I have heard very bad stories about Costas customer service also. I lost a nose pad off of my Triple Tails and Costa would not send me a part but wanted for me to send them in for a costly repair. I still wear them as they are and do like them. But the company as a whole could run any customer off.

Im a costa retailer,I also sell Maui Jim and smith action optics as well as oakley.Costa del mar has the best customer service and warranty of any company I deal with in any catagory.Yes they do charge for broken lenses but so does every other company. They offer a lifetime warranty on their frames no box or reciept requirerd.Try that with any other brand .Yes they have instituted a $10.00 handeling charge, but that is the sum total of your costly repair.Usualy you end up with a completly new pair of glasses and if the ones you send in have been discontinued they just have you pick out another style. There are lots of great glasses out there and life would be boring if we didnt have opposing views so wear what you like and go fishing.Oh yeah my line broke on a big fish whos in on a class action against berkley.

I sent in my Costas which the lenses shattered while sitting on top of a cooler in the back of the boat and at the same time sent in my father's which he sat on. The warrantied my fathers and rejected mine. Never again, I also am a big fan of Smiths.
