Default Hatteras Report 5-11-07

Sorry for the late report but I didn't get back home until yesterday.

Myself and a crew of three saw a two day window and left mid-day Thursday for the Friday/Saturday bite. The plan was to put some mahi meat in the boat early and then go after tuna. Most of the tuna bite has moved on so we had the kite ready.

We got a good start Friday morning and headed to the 240 line about 40 fathoms. Lines in and we found a major rip about one hour later. It had a good weedline as well. As soon as we hit it, the game was on. From 8:00 until noon we had constant action. With the grass and all the bites it was constant work. Nice gaffers were all around us. Multiple hookups were common and the mahi put on a real show behind the boat. By noon we had 16 fish weighing 180 lbs.

Since we had plenty of meat, we put the kite out but we struck out on the tuna bite. We flew two yummies and trolled a couple of witches behind the boat as well. We didn't have anything on the kite but missed a short strike on one witch. I saw the small tuna hit it but no luck. By 3:00 we were ready to go clean fish and get ready for the next day.

Saturday we headed to the same area. Big mistake. Everything had changed. The rip was 5 miles inshore in shallow water and the weeds were scattered. I knew it was going to be tough scratching out a bite. We finished Saturday with only two smaller mahi and missed a couple of others. Remind me to never fish the same place two days in a row.

The good part about Saturday was we added another crew member. Chris (blue20pc) joined us and he is always fun to fish with. I just wish we could have done better for him but he didn't go home empty.

Mahi fishing in May at Hatteras is always fun. All nice fish. The peanuts dont arrive until June. Enjoy!!

Ahh, Alan, you have to post up the pic, it's ok, everyone knows now. I was pro-active and put it out there.

Let's see my 140 lbs soaking wet, it'll be good fun. Fishing or not, everyone's interested, and my ankle has already healed up.

Good thing I wasn't wearing the Mustang, I had just taken it off.

Thanks SFried! Had a blast fishing with Alan and his crew. I hope to be invited back. Maybe we'll have to tie me off to the boat and have one of the fella's hold my hand when I get off the boat.

PM'd you back Alan, BTW.

Are you sure you saw someone taking a pic? It's not on my camera but it probably did make the highlight reel on the Teach's webcam. I'll check Stan's camera.
