Question Kona charter rec — August

Looking for a charter in Kona, HI in early August. Two adults, three kids aged 10-13. Charter more for the kids to enjoy as the two adults — we’d be happy with anything! Half day probably better as the kids have never been out of sight of land and not sure if seasickness will occur.

Recommendations welcome, thanks all.

You will not be out of sight of land in Kona waters.

I thought you’ get plenty responses, so here’s a little more:

August is prime Blue Marlin season. September maybe only slightly better. Check the HAwaii International Billfish Tournament schedule to make sure you’re not trying to charter then.

Plenty good charter boats. Northern Lights is very popular.

In no particular order: Norther Lights, Lepika, Marlin Magic, Humdinger, Ihu Nui. all great boats. Lepika is a smaller boat (31') but Russ is very fishy. Other boats, bigger (and more expensive).

We fished the SNAFU formerly Melle. Great captain and mate. The new boat has the Omni sonar which is cool to see in action. You will be looking at land all day on the leeward side of the island.

I run a charter company. We have two boats and we specialize in custom private charter that are perfect for the kids and the whole family. Our most popular charter is a 4hr custom charter combined with Fishing and snorkeling. www.captainchadscharters.com Call or text the company number anytime! We'd love to have you out! August is open

I had a great trip with High Noon out of Kona, runs a cool Blackfin Sportfisher. Lots of marlin action that day.

I've fished with Russ on Lepika three times. Very good success with him each time but all trips were in February. You can't go wrong with Russ as far as I'm concerned. We did some trolling but the majority of the time when I was aboard was fishing live bait which we caught at daybreak on Sabiki rigs. Yellowfin tuna was our target then but did catch smaller striped marlin & smaller mahi when on the troll. Lepika is spotless, he's kept it in very good shape.

thanks for coming our way! Sorry I didn’t see this til now. I live on Hilo side.

Bite me fishing is huge. honokohau harbor is the best option for you.

they have a semi-private thing where a local business rents out boats and takes contractors out fishing for a private tournament. I went out on foxy lady but it’s not here anymore. many really nice boats and all captains I’ve met are very friendly and knowledgeable.

Sweet, thanks everyone for the recommendations. We are now booked on the Humdinger with the Fays and cannot wait. Looks like an amazing fishery and MANY boats who know what the F they are doing!

I will remember to update this thread with a report and photos.
