Default Swordfishing line

This is not a reel question... But more a line quantity question. What's the least amount of line you would try swording with? 1000 yrds? 1500 yrds? I have killed some fish(100-400lbs) and all the ones I have killed never went crazy far per say. Just seeing if I have been lucky or if you don't need a crazy amount all the time. Might set up another reel or two is why I ask.

And you prefer 65 or 80? I know current plays a factor but what do you use and where. Thanks for the replies and insight!

Many questions. Daytime or night time. Mono or braid. Fishing up in the water column or on the bottom. Night time fishing on (Or near) the top any 50 wide with 400 yds (50 lb.) or so of line (mono) will be plenty for 99% if the fish you will run into. Daytiming you are going to need at least 800 yds of braid (65 is good).

Daytime, on the bottom in the deep. Thank you for the reply.

Day timing out of ponce inlet current is average 2-3kts sometimes more. Something like 2000yds 65# power pro. Sometimes with that current we have, there’s almost 3000ft of line out when we hook the fish.

We fish the keys 1200 to 2000 feet . Can have 3000 feet of line out. Depending on current and weight used.

Location dependent. Here in NJ we are never deeper than 1500-1600'

Realistically, for daytiming, no more than 1200 yds of 65-70 lb solid core is needed. You'll see a lot more than that on LP's, Hookers (50/70/80), and Kristals mainly because the reel holds a lot more than that.
