Default How much hollow core on tiagra 80

I just ordered 2 new tiagra 80ís. I want to put 200lb hollow core with 100-200yd 200# mono top shot. How much of the hollow core would I need per reel? Iím having a hard time knowing length to order.

ive read endless posts previously posted on forums but canít find what Iím looking for. Best I found was 750yds 200# hollow with 50yd 200# mono top but on penn 80, seems like it should take more hollow than that though.

Why such heavy topshot? What are you fishing for?

Big Ahi with occasional marlins. Iím on Kauai, rough waters. I want the fish on the boat as fast as possible and line back in the water.

Default How much hollow core

I asked this same question to Basil at BHP Tackle. His reply was 1200 yards Jerry Brown Hollow core to have enough room for 100 yard 200 lb top shot with bridle

Since I can only find spools in 600yds or 1500yds, Iím going to order the 1500yd and put 750yds of hollow into each reel and top off with however much mono will fit, probably 200+yds of mono top.

mahalo for the replies!!!!

p.s. I think I already have 180 mono, so Iíll probably just go with that for top and get a little more line on there. 🤙🤙🤙

Default How much hollow core.....

Best advice, send your reel to BAsil at BHP Tackle and tell him what you want and.he will put it on right. Tell him what braid and topshot and it will be perfect!

If you insist on DIY he sells any length spool you want to buy. Check it out. Seems like every 100yds of top shot you loose 200 ish yards of braid based on above

Basil will send you exactly what you need. BUT...... While shipping him your reels would be expensive HI to NJ to HA, with that much hollow core you'd really have to work to get it all on tightly! I spooled up a 50 VSW reel by walking out all the line back and forth over a baseball field the slowly round line on. It was 95 degrees. When I was done I said "I'll never do that again"

I think you nailed it with the 1500 yard spool. My Penn 80 took about 800 yards of cheap Amazon 200lb braid and 150 yards of momoi 120lb mono. In your shoes I would do exactly what your planning. Build one of these

yeah, shipping would be pricey to ship that far. Iíll report back after I get mine all spoiled with a final count of what fit.

USPS flat-rate costs the same from anywhere in the country. The 80’s will fit in a large flat-rate box.

OP - if you're confident in your knot tying skills, reach out to texas blue on here. Buy some of his new solid 200 braid and have him make you a top shot of your length and #. Tie a bimini in the 200lb solid and do a loop to loop. You'll probably save 3x the $. I am never one to sacrifice money for quality in the business but Blue Action will get you both... I know nothing beats a 100% connection of hollow but properly tied bimini is tough to beat and with that pound line, for backing and top shot, you would need extreme drag to truly test it.

I think USPS ships their boxes with a catapult over the ocean, cause thatís what they look like after! It never ends well, especially with 2 brand new tiagra 80ís. Pacific Ocean box trolls or something!!

If you do a good job packing them they’d be fine. I’ve shipped reels to the mainland several times and hundreds of other boxes, only a very few issues.
