Default Offshore Oregon Inlet Suggestions

Looking to book a trip the last week of July, goal is to put some meat in the cooler early and go looking for billfish. My son and I have chartered out of Oregon Inlet on the True Grit and Point Runner in years past as well as numerous trips out for Miami and Marathon but this trip we will be taking some first timers out. Any suggestions on boats that would be good for absolute beginners for this type of fishing? Teenage boys 16-17 years old plus me being the old man of the group.

I was just looking into going up there and fishing a few days , I have been going through billfish withdrawals since I can't fly out yet . Here's a post from the Carolina section .

I don't see why point runner wouldn't be a good fit for an inexperienced crew, fish straight up catches the fish

Any boat from Pirates Cove, Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, or Wanchese Marina should be a great trip. We go with Kenny Midgett on the Marlin Gull out of Pirates Cove every year but all of the boats have professional captains and mates that want to see you have fun and catch fish. They will work for you and your guest to make the trip one you will want to repeat year after year. This is how they stay in business.

Call Brynner on the Smoker. Been fishing with him for years. Very nice, BIG boat and he will put you on the meat for sure. Their customers return every years and most fish many times a year for reason. Tell him Robert on the Red Label told you to call, he will take care of you!

I've fished with Sea Note, Canyon Runner and others out of OI. If I were going then I'd consider Patriot Sportfishing w Pete Doran!!

I would add Capt. Tom Kraus on the Hooker at the Fishing Center. Other captains joke about following him. Mark

Just fished with Captain Ned and first mate George on the Sea Breeze. They put us on the fish! We fished this past Saturday, 5-23.

We fished two charters out of wanchese last spring . The canyon runner which was excellent and phideaux which was very lack luster. The phideaux had a sign in the lounge that stated they expect you to tip the mate 20% which was over $400. He only deployed 1 rod with bait the entire trip. He sat in the cabin 90% of the time and expected us to reel in the 30 lb bird every time it was needed. Also the captain did nothing to help fight the one fish we hooked.
The captain left the boat idling the whole time my brother was fighting a giant bluefin tuna. He never tried to run down the fish to gain line or turn the boat toward the fish. They did all of this knowing we couldnt keep the fish due to regulations, we saw it breach and knew it was a jumbo. Long story short, the fish was practically dead by the time it got to the boat. The mate removed the hook and watched it float away belly up without any effort to revive it.

The OIFC boats are great for beginners. I would second Capt Brynner on the Smoker and Capt. Kenneth on the Trophy Hunter.

Plenty of great boats and crews.
Game Changer is the nicest of the fleet. Large, fast and comfortable yacht finish. Capt Greg and Carson are great great fishermen and a super nice people. Fished with them both many times. You will have a great trip

have noticed this around the world. Great fisheries make mediocre capts look good.

I’ll throw in Bi-op-sea out of OIFC and Waste Knot out of Pirates Cove. Always helpful to look who’s booked solid and who isn’t.
