Default Slow Buddy Davis

Hey guys long time lurker first time poster.

I'm looking at a 47' Buddy Davis sportfisher and trying to figure some stuff out. I know the BDs are famous for having wildly varrying cruise speeds usually based on how heavy they are/how much resin is used. I've heard anything from 21kts to 26kts is normal. Well the one I'm looking at cruises at 19 MPH which is the slowest I've heard of. The motors were just overhauled a few engjne hours ago. Broker states that the speed issues are due to 2 seperate things
1. The boat is running four blade props and they are pretty scared up and
2: it's running smaller injectors than what was originally speccd

What are yalls thoughts on this? I'm concerned the reason that there are 4 blade props to begin with is because the boat may have been having issues planing out or something of that nature but the broker states it's because the owner needed the responsiveness ov 4 blade props to get out of his slip without hitting a closely parked 41' boat. No reason given for the smaller injectors.

Either way I will have a surveyor check it out but want to get an idea of what I'm getting into before I drop a couple grand on all of that.

Engines are Detroit Diesel 8v92 735 HPs

What injectors are in the engines? Each has a tag on it. 735's came originally with "145".

I have sea trialed several BD 47. It is true some are so heavy they are super hard to plane. Others were fairly light on their feet.

How much crap stored in the boat?

If you are looking at one that is in the "piggy" category, I'd walk.

Well matched 4b props are not going to create a big speed deficit compared to 3b. Maybe a knot.

Fished on 2 of them there may be some nice ones out there but those 2 were very poor performs.the h/p and fuel burns were not equal to the performance.the Capt of 1 of them said it ran like a soggy slug buyer beware.

Not sure on the gear but does have a tower and I'm sure a few extras here and there. Not sure on injectors either I'll find out and update though. Good to know they need 145s. The boat is going to be weighed this coming week which should shed some more light

If you can try to find one repowered, if your set on the BD, throw feeler threads out everywhere, sportfishing classifieds FB group and similars, i've found many boats for myself or friends this way because your able to pull from the "ehhh I was thinking about selling but havent listed it yet" crowd, etc.

Also in my experience alot of times brokers "post" speeds in their listings without having ran the boat or having first hand knowledge. Youll see these things on seatrial obviously.

If that's a bridge boat with a tower don't be surprised at the speed. I ran an express with 800 cats , cruise was an honest 21 knts. That rig is under powered first off, the express weighed 48000 on the scale.

If the props are messed up you would probably feel it.

If the owner does not care enough to fix the props and put in the correct injectors do you think they spent the $$ for a decent overhaul?

There are so many 47's out there, so why take a chance on one that clearly is not running right?

Friend of mine has a 1987 47 BD with the Detroits. I’ve run the boat quite a bit and she cruises 23-25- faster in colder weather. He has had the motors tuned by a very good mechanic. Boat is getting new props from S&S in a few weeks.

I don’t think the 47 would plane off at 19 kts

Price mostly and location, next nearest buddy Davis is 100k . I agree though the props are concerning me, that's a pretty cheap fix all things considered

The deal about the props and getting out of the slip sounds fishy to me

They have great lines and look like a great way to get into a custom boat for cheap but there is a reason they sell for what they do, I would go into that purchase with eyes wide open, a lot of downside risk

So question for the OP. Is your plan to buy it and do minimal work to it to use it? Cause if it is the 89 itís a solid boat but it will need to living and if I am correct Davis put a fairly large keel on that Hull you could shave it down and get more speed but itís underpowered. And as stated before someone who canít spend a couple hundred on a diver and a prop shop to fix the wheels or put the best ones on for a flat bottom Carolina hull is. Little worrisome. But Iím not you I just wanted to put some pennies in the fountain so to speak.

I'm not afraid of a little money but I definitely don't feel like paying for 0 he motors just to toss them out with a repower. I'll have to look a little closer at the most recent survey but I'm definitely thoroughly spooked on this boat. Not abandoning it yet though.

Side note thanks for all the help guys. Im active in a lot of different forums but this has been one of the most useful and responsive I've been in. I will keep y'all updated
