Default Avet vs accurate

I know this has been discussed before but this is 2 specific reels. I Am getting a striper stealth medium heavy rod and have my eye on the Avet jx 4.6 mc and the accurate tern 300 4.7:1. I need them to be relatively low maintenance other than cleaning them out every year and greasing them and making sure everything is fine. Oh and they are about the same price and am fishing/catching stripers 30 inches and above.

The Avet and the Accurate are totally different reels in terms of workmanship and finish and tolerances. The reason they are the same price is star vs lever drag. Which is a personal preference kind of thing.

I have to say that despite their reputation for quality, I have had very poor experience with Accurate Boss reels and have given up on them. Even after sending them back to the factory for repair and service, I would only get a few months before another problem cropped up. Maybe the other models are better, can't say.

Last year I got a couple of Avet SX G2 5.3 reels that have been excellent and so far trouble free -- and were a lot cheaper.

For striper, Avet. It isn't a technical/difficult fish. The G2 gives you a little extra drag. No need at all for the 2 speed reels. Won't need more than an MX unless you need extra capacity for trolling.

How do you avoid catching stripers that are less than 30" ?

Both those reels will be fine for stripers. Overkill actually. An old Zebco will get you 99% of the stripers you will hook. Personally I am in love with the Okuma Metaloid 5 for stripers and everything else smaller than 50 pound tunas. They are a great all around reel with a reel fast retrieve so they are great for trolling, jigging, live baiting etc. you should check them out.

I have both Accurates and Avets
I don't like the anti-reverse in the Avets but I think that has been addressed in the newer G2's

That JX is way too big for stripers
If Avet, I'd look at an SX or MX

I have used both and when it was time to turn pro staff, I chose Accurate.

I gave up on Avets because the drags suck and the clickers never work.

A couple of buddies have Terns and really like them.

The two years of free service can't be beat.

I have owned four avets, I only sold two because I wanted something different and I regret it. I purchased the new accurate turn because apparently it's the new hotness and much better and after half a season the anti reverse failed.

I would just get an avet.

I do a lot of chunking and jigging zebras. They hold up if you don't lock up the drag.

haha well you can’t, you just have to find the right bait that won’t attract the tiny fatties.

Accurate is a better reel. It is also 75% more for the same class reel? ( I could be wrong). If you were talking billfish, tarpon, fish that need specific things from reels, I would say Accurate. However, striper are big and far from technical in a fight. More like reeling in a 5 gallon bucket. I don't think your usage needs the extra quality. I am on 6 years with Avets and never had an issue with any of them. The rods I have for something like white marlin pitchbait, I spend more money on a nicer reel.

The Avets are nice enough reels for striped bass to still be considered a nice reel, without being overkill. I am not spending $400 on a reel just to do it.

I have about a dozen avets from sx to 30's. So far the 30's have held up well trolling for tuna but the smaller ones (sx and mx) have all ben sent back to avet for repair of drags, anti reverse etc. The last sx needed service after a little more than a year and lighty used so I'm starting to change my opinion of them.

Stripers,

I can honestly say I have never done any maintenance on any of my Accurate reels and ride the hard and put them away wet (literally).

Maybe once a year I wipe them down with WD40, but that is it, no other care whatsoever.

Livebait tuna fishing is extremely hard on reels and so are charter clients, but our failure rate has been around 10% or so.

Every year I send them in to Accurate for the free service and they always complain about all the salt in my reels (they send you a summary of service with your reel), but they still make them new again for free.

At least one of the Accurate fan boys is sponsered by them. I have 20+ Avets that get heavy use commercial Tuna fishing with rod and reel. The clickers need to be louder on the Avets, but that's about it. I service them once a year, if your going to do it yourself, their easier than the Accurates, I have 1 that I won. Great freespool and the drags have held up well for me.

If price is a factor, they are a better value.

The Accurate I have is also a nice reel, but the Avets work for me.
