Default Grouper Rod

I am looking for two grouper rod /reel combos to bottom fish and occasionally troll. Looking at Shimano Tallus, 6’6” rated for 65-200 lb braid, heavy action. For a reel, looking to pit it with the Speedmaster 16II. Any thoughts on this combo?

That combo will do you just fine. Load it with 65-80lb braid and catch 'em up.

The Speedmaster II is a lever drag reel and not the best for bottom fishing. I'd seriously look at the Torium 30 PG, loaded with 65# braid which produces 33# of drag. Put it on a Terez rod rated the same as the Tallus.

The Torium/Terez combo would be really nice. I prefer to use the lightest tackle I can get away with so I would probably choose a smaller Torium.
If you’re shopping on a budget, put the money into the reel and buy a cheaper rod. The Penn Rampage and Star jigging rods are both really nice for such inexpensive rods.

Thanks guys. This is very helpful. I’ve been doing some more reading about various star drag reels and also may want to consider the Diawa Saltiga. Any thoughts on Saltiga vs Torium?

A Saltiga is a few notches above the Torium. The new PG's are damn good for the money. I have a thread going here where I make a mod to the Torium to bulletproof it, do a mini-service and spool them:

I have several Daiwa Saltist reels (20, 35, 40 sizes) and like them pretty well. I assume the Saltiga would be nicer but I’ve never used one.
Also used Torium reels. They feel more refined than a Saltist. In my experience, durability is similar between those two.

I fish level drags for bottom fish year round. Benefit of not being on a star drag is while fighting certain species. My drag is set to strike is decent for most species and if we get jacks or larger I tell them to push it to full. The new speedmaster is supposed to have 40# of drag. Neat little reel I checked it out at Capt Harrys this past weekend. I would stick with Shimano, they make a beast of a smooth reel. Since you are thinking of trolling, that would be the route I go.

I’d recommend an all glass rod for groupers. Just my opinion after seeing lots of the hybrid/composite rods break. Esp when someone with not much experience high sticks it. Glass rod is forgiving and has the ass
