Default Dog vs Red snapper?

Got out off NE Fl last Friday and caught a bunch of fish that looked like dog snapper on the fish rules app. The picture of the red snapper was a huge fish and looked nothing like the fish I was catching. Out of fear I threw them all back. Once I got home I looked up juvenile red snapper pictures and they looked like the fish I caught. Good thing because I got checked at the ramp coming in. I guess these days you have to be a marine biologist to tell the difference.

Dog snapper have a distinct light colored marking under the eye and are browner.

Probably mangrove(grey) snapper.

I've caught 1 dog snapper and thousands upon thousands of red snapper out of N FL. If you caught a bunch I would put a very high probability of them being red snapper. .

Threw them all back but they did have a small circular mark near the tail

Small circular mark sounds more like mutton or lane snapper. Easiest to tell the difference by whether the anal fin is round or pointed (much easier to tell when they are adult size). It would be good to learn all of these subtle differences if you're bottom fishing.

Juvenile red snapper have the spot near the tail like lanes and muttons. When red snapper showed up in the Big Bend in 2015, they were all small ones. Lots of people kept them thinking that they were lanes.

I was fishing with Triumph Rick out of Hernando several years ago and saw the "spot" on the back, and we threw a couple in the fish box. When they continued to come up, I looked at them more carefully and we decided they were juvenile ARS. They lacked the yellow stripes of a Lane. We threw them all back

The first time I saw the juvi's was in 2015 when a diver came back to my boat with a stringer of them. No yellow stripes -- they were not lanes. Lanes also have a different body form.
