Default Reel for Wire Bunker Spoon Setup

Looking to get a few reels to match up with Tony Maja Bunker spoon rods. I see that the Tekota 700/800 is a popular choice. Any other suggestions for a cheaper alternative? Was looking at maybe an older Penn 330 or even a Penn Squall 30. Anybody have any experience with these reels and wire?

Grab an older penn 113 with the chrome over bronze spool. The spool is important because if you get the wrong reel the spool will literally turn into Swiss cheese due to corrosion and dissimilar metals. The tekotas are notorious for that, guys will strip the wire off the reels during the off-season, but it is just delaying the inevitable.

I personally use the Penn #49, it’s a narrow Senator with the chrome spool I mentioned above. The narrow reel is a little easier to manage leveling line, I upgraded the drags to the newest style washers and they’re smooth as butter. The older penn senators & variants are bulletproof They will last me a long time!!

We used the Penn 4/0s for most of my life. A few years ago we switched to the Tekota 800s. After a few seasons we are very impressed and happy we made the switch. We fish 25 or so bass trips a year using wire at least most of those trips. The reels have been flawless. The spool corrosion is minor at best after 3 1/2 seasons and when the time comes to change out the spools and drags that is reasonably priced as well.
