I much prefer to fish my own or a friends boat. I find it more relaxing, enjoyable & rewarding, being in control than of my own destiny.

a shrimp basket is about the size of an average laundry basket, if you were being serious, which btw I wasn’t when I asked.

I thought the comment was funny then started thinking that I have never actually held a shrimp basket other than what my fried shrimp dinner comes in so was wondering how much ice it held. I now know!

never fails. THT member posts a reasonable review and folks here attack the messenger. Several members have echoed his experience. Heck even the OPs response to the captain's rebuttal was gracious and professional.

To those of ya'll, go read the vendor section of THT if 5 star ratings is all you're looking for.

I don't know, I mentioned an awful review about the boat I'm going on in a post above. The dude totally ripped the boat, the captain, the length of the trip and the microwaved eggs! He posted here and on the boats Facebook page. I asked him a couple of questions about his complaint and there was never an answer.

You really need to name your charter so everyone knows never to book a trip with you. You really come off as a first rate douche.

Most of what I've seen out on Venice are 17-19k for 12 hrs plus fuel. My buddies and I are doing it because I just retired and it's something that looked really special. People can talk away about Cabo and all that other stuff but I've heard so much about the rigs that I wanted to try it. My only other yellowfin was in Maui 7 years ago and it only cost $200 a person but the 130 lb fish belonged to the boat and it was a 32 ft Bertam. All this fussing plus another thread that says the tuna fishing sucks right now have me wondering but, as we used to say, FIDO!

"but books charters to actually go fishing (errr.. do the fishing for him)"

That's some high grade bs right there.

My charter company is called D Bag Charters. We specialize in not hurting anyone's feelings and answering questions before during and after charters.

Honestly, take it easy jack, I do not have a charter, was just calling it like i saw it, must have struck a nerve. The OP had some valid points and the charter capt came on here and issued a full and reasonable response. Everyone can go back to crushing the fish with their awesome charters, or at least writing about it on the internet.

Right? LOL. It's honestly hilarious. Do it for the 'Gram. Not only is it $3000 but then you get to pay the fuel!!! LOL I guess a sucker is born everyday.

Just for shits and giggles:
Airline ticket from where I am to San Jose, Costa Rica - $523
Flight from San Jose to Quepos, Costa Rica - $182
AirBNB in Quepos, Costa Rica for 3 nights - $28 a night @ $84
30' full day offshore with John's company - $850 + $150 tip = $1000
28' full day inshore with John's company - $550 + $85 tip = $635
Total - $2424

That's called the tip. Every charter boat I've ever worked on or booked has had a sign somewhere that said some version of "tips are appreciated". Being friendly is how you get a good one.

Additionally, some of us are fishing nerds who like to learn everything we can about fishing techniques so we can either apply them to our own fishery if we normally live elsewhere or apply them on our own boats. If it bothers a mate or captain to talk about fishing, they should probably find a different job.

plus the hookers are plentiful.

If were talking about the Capt Colin that I met at the boat show, hes a quiet dude not very talkative. I wasnt offended about it.

OK you are right about two things

1- that 200 is the tip, you are right if capt and mate are great and you really enjoy it seems like they deserve a nice tip, if they are aholes then it should be ok to stiff them, good point there

2 - some of yall definitely seem to be nerds!

Unga Bunga 09-13-2019 05:17 PM

All I can add is this...
The the term "nerd" should have been purged from one's vocabulary at about the age of 16...

Maybe after Rick gets done fixing reels he should start a customer service consulting firm.
There are lots of business people that would benefit from that course.

Bullshipper 09-13-2019 06:11 PM

Thee are some charters in Mexico that run $5K a day on a 65' Merrit, Josh Temple. Nba Players mostly.
