No, most are not dicks, at least no in places that rely on repeat business. On second thought, let me amend that - they aren't dicks to their customers. Yes, it is a hard job. No, customers aren't generally a pain in the ass. Some are but they are the exception, not the rule. If you are a charter fisherman and you think that, generally speaking, your customers are a pain in the ass you need to quit chartering and start commercial fishing. Charter fishing isn't for you.

Troutchaser21, thanks for posting your experience in Venice. While i am a lowly inshore guide, i grinds my gears reading about another in the industry that takes his profession so casually. Drop me a pm if you ever want to fish big lake with your dad, he can have a seat and front deck on my boat any day.

Based on the side of the story we have, the captain is not good at all on the customer service side of being a captain, gotta wonder how they are booked so solid? But, he seems to be good at catching fish and all their boats are awesome, but his business should suffer regardless. Yall are hung up on what I said earlier being as "excuse" but it was not that, it was an observation that was unflattering to both the captain and the customer. Imagine not being able to figure out how to get ice for your fish in a marina full of ice, and then coming to the internet to post about it?? Just being realistic that there is certainly another point of view on how this trip went, we probably just wont hear it because the Captain is either busy fishing or busying playing his crazy stereo (only for himself - no customers allowed to listen).

Not all of them. Capt. Chad and Carlos with voodoo were a couple of the nicest captains I’ve ever fished with. They knew the bite was going to be slow, they told us up front but we still had a blast fishing with them and would go back in a heartbeat to fish with those boys!

I fished with the Captain. I forgot my grundens and he was able to keep me warm the whole day. Great trip.

Captains have off days, just like anyone else.
There was another charter captain got written up here lately, his fan club came out in droves, same as this one. (Almost, this one appears to have more detractors).
Seems they just come out and rip the OP's as being bad customers, having unrealistic expectations, etc.
I really don't see the need to attack the OP, at least he is real, not like he posted a review and didn't take the ride.
I have seen other vendors come on here and either collaborate the OP, disagree with him, or work out a solution.
So far nothing from MGFC or the captain. It's not like they don't know they thread is out there.
Would seem like the perfect opportunity to do a little public relations management.

Sorry for the bad experience. I haul my boat down there and have brought a handful of local deckhands/captains out on my boat to help me out. One of them was a MG hand that now runs a boat. He was an hour late, fully hung over, and was just no fun to be around, running down pretty much every boat that wasn't a freeman. Including mine. We came in early. He was asleep as I white knuckled my way through traffic and obstacles around the pass. You don't get to run that sort of boat by delivering a poor experience all the time. But that day, he was having a bad day for sure...

The next day we had a first class guy on our boat. He showed us some tricks, helped us navigate and properly mark the passes and worked all day to get us on a few fish. We've fished with him regularly since.

I think MGFC sets the bar really high. People come in see those big freemans and all their high dollar gear and figure the fish will just be everywhere. I imagine the OP would not be venting if they whacked the tuna.

I am sure they have some good captains but when your charging those rates peoples expectations are very high. I charter boats at least 6 times a year. Most of the captains are crusty old bastards but they produce. Their boats also look like hell but they are well maintained.

The captains I have fished with would have thrown the mate off the boat if they disrespected someones father.

I’d like to clear something up here. This review had nothing to do with the quantity of fish that were boxed that day. If we had whacked them maybe he would of had a good attitude, maybe not, I don’t know. All I can tell you is what did take place, and that is what this review is about.

In the start of your thread you didn't get on the boat you requested and eluded to that the reasons were not acceptable but never shared those reasons but damn sure spoke of the Captains name.

Why did the rear seating second row boat that you requested not run your trip you requested?

Lets hear the reason you got put on another boat. You stated the reason of your trip change sounded unreasonable to start with.

Please elaborate.

Default your words

'We booked a trip a few months in advance for the first weekend of September to fish on Richard Draper’s new dual row seating boat. I got a call the week of saying that it was no longer available for reasons that were hard to believe."

That read to me that not being sure it was 100% true he wasn't going to add that to the gripe as possible speculation. That's the right choice IMO.

I get it now - not like " Space Aliens " stole it or it split in half but he didn't trust what he was told 100 % . Thanks .

Interesting. Not the first I heard of this down there. If they have a policy for seating then they should brief it. Maybe when they tell you where any safety gear is. ZERO excuses for treating people like that. I am glad the OP had the sack to post what I think is a completely honest review.
