Default Fighting off the Jacks IDEAS?

Fishing out of NC this past Saturday we came across a floating bamboo shoot. Pulled 4 wahoo off of it before the troll bite died. Last pass I saw peanut dolphin jumping around it so I had my crew pull in the trolling gear and break out the spin tackle. We pulled up to it and it was covered with probably 200 little jacks, a dozen triple tail, and probably 100 bailer dolphin under them. We casted jigs, poppers, and squid and couldn't get the baits past the jacks to the dolphin. even tried rocketing squid through the jacks with a 10 ounce sinker... no luck, the little suckers still hit it on the way down. Left with no dolphin... no triple tail... and a strong dislike for these little jacks. Does anybody have any suggestions on what we could do different next time we run across this situation?

Throw a bunch of cut pieces of bait away from the school drawing them away and have your hooked baits ready to drop.

When dolphin are hungry they have no problem joining in and out competing the jacks for your bait. I think what you encountered was an all too common occurrence, and one we experienced a few times this weekend as well, the dolphin just weren't hungry. Not much you can do, live bait will sometimes get them to bite, as will the commotion of the jacks eating, but if they aren't coming up and checking out your baits or if they are and they're turning their nose up at them, there isn't much you can do short of jumping in and shooting them.

You could also try using one of the smaller jacks as bait if you don't have any livebait.

To the point of getting the dolphin to bite.I have had them stay deep, then get them going on live white bait.Last year we had about 50 come by when bottom fishing in the GOM.They stayed deep and wouldn't bite anything.I threw a large handful of live shrimp out and they came up and went crazy. We caught around 18-20,could have gotten more.Capt.Mike

There’s a product out there that keeps them from hitting. It’s called “Jack “ something...I can’t quite remember. Maybe Jack Away or Jack Not On...something like that.
