Default Kite reels- Penn Fathom HS?

I am trying to complete my arsenal for kite fishing, I have 6 Star Rods I love, all 7’, great rods, 3 of which I have matched with Penn Squall 40LD’s, which have been great, decent speed at 5.1 gear ratio (much better than the 3.6 of the TLD 20’s I grew up with), and 3 rods I just got and need to get reels for. I have not used the Fathom 40LDHS, but like what I see on them with about 20% more line capacity, and a 7.1 gear ratio. I am wondering whether to get all 6 new Fathom’s and re-purpose the Squalls, or to just add 3 more Squalls and be done with it.The Fathoms are a little more $, but not too much more, and seem like a better reel for the kite. Anybody using these for their kite reels?

I know there are some other options that are great, maybe even better than above, but I am only looking for Penn reels. Thanks.

I switched from Diawa Saltiga hyper speeds to the penn fathom 40 NLDHS and absolutely love them. Love the drag curve, love the drag lever, love the drag clicker and line capacity. Right now we’re using them for light trolling and bottom fishing. But they are excellent kite reels and excellent for slow trolling. Bought 4 at first and then 4 more a week later and have no intention of switching. I have them paired up to 7’ Connley kingfish 15-30lb rods

I've got a pair of the 40 NLD high speeds and love them.

I have both and would put it this way: Squall= Good
Fathom= Way Better.
Fathom has everything you could need on a Kite Reel, speed, line capacity & smooth drag. Metal frame also is an advantage on the Fathom IMO. I use my Squalls strictly for Trolling for Dolphin, Tuna, Kingfish etc, while my Fathoms do Live Bait, Bottom Fish and also Light/Medium Trolling duties.

Fathom being a superior/more expensive reel I would get 3 first to run my kite lines (I don’t know how many lines you run but let’s say 3) and see how you like them while putting the Squall for flat/deep lines and go from there. Your other option of getting all 6 Fathoms doesn’t sound bad at all if the wallet can handle it.

Hope this helps.

To further complicate your decision, the Fathom II's were just released by Penn.

Another thumbs up for the Fathoms. Same as you, I started with the Squalls and upgraded to the 40NLDS Fathoms. Backed with braid and frequent top shot replacement their hard to beat for the $.

I've had my fathoms for 3 years now & love them. I bought them for 175 each. I'll check the site & see if they still stock them.
