Default Tuna Livebaiting Reels

Hi Guys,

I've used Tiagras and Avets. Im looking for a compact overhead reel, twin speed with loads of power. Accurate? I'd be using braid and running 80lb. Something versatile to also troll for marlin. I find the Tiagras too big and heavy. Any suggestions. Budget is not an issue. TIA. A custom rod suggestion too-stand up. I like a finer taper

Anyone used an Accurate ATD 12? 400 yards of 80 braid.

How big are those Marlin? 400 will deal with small guys and most med size fish, but you will lose some bigger ones.

A 30 is too heavy? I'd at least get a 16 if you're trolling for marlin.

Avet HXW Raptor. With braid it will have plenty of capacity. Plenty of drag and lightweight.

The 30 is probably the sweet spot. I didn't click that the 12 was a '12' size. I've got an Avet 5/2 which is small and powerful. I had a TRX which was overkill and like an anchor winch. I realise you need size for capacity. Thanks all

Maybe the Accurate ATD 30? I have 11 ATD’s two of which are 30s. Awesome reels.

Accurates are what most of the people use on the San Diego long range trips. Look on BDoutdoors forum for more info

Makaira SEA. Have Mak 15 SEAS and Mak 30 SEAS and they are monsters. Have a couple Talica 16s too, they are great as well. The talicas are much smoother, but the Makaira is built like a small tank. It is a total monster.

Where are you fishing, Bahamas, Northern GOM, Baja? Knee jerk reaction is Talica 25 because of the weight smoothness and super light clicker, but some styles of live-baiting lend themselves to different performance parameters in your gear. And not sure what you mean by a "finer taper" when describing a rod blank. If you could clarify that for me I can probably recommend some blanks to get wrapped up.

This is completely unbalanced - the weight of the Talica 50 no good on a CC special.

A Black Hole 450g is best paired with a Talica 25, Avet HX Raptor or HXW Raptor, or Accurate Boss 800 or 1000. All of these reels can put down tremendous drag and subdue big fish in the hands of a good angler. And the 450g can handle 28# of drag all day.

OP - I have some spiral 450g Black Holes for sale on THT at the moment. Bad ass rods. I fish them with HXW Raptors which I think are a better reel than a Talica 25.

Accurate, Talica, or Makaira are good choices without necessity of price consideration
I love Penn VSX or VSW but they are a bit weighty
I know some guys love thier Avets but they are not the equal to
these from an engineering quality standpoint.
The Makairas are using patents that Okuma bought from Tiburon ..quite impressive ..
especially from a price/value perspective.
My .02
Probably worth less than that.
I find preferences are often based more on opinion that fact,,myself included.
