Default Old deer meat for shark bait ??

Always Keep couple deer in my freezer and every now and then one ends up in there longer than I like to keep it (always keep each deer on a separate shelf so I know how long it has been there

Actually got one on bottom shelf that is approaching 4 yrs, just been lazy on throwing this out but do not want throw in trash can due to defrosting and sticking up every thing .

Headed to our vacation home later this month and buddy of mine suggested taking some of it and using it for shark bait, my BIL and 2 nephews are really wanting to catch a decent size shark (bull shark would make their day ). It is both burger and some roasts/steaks .

Thought about loading some of it in cooler for poops n giggles to try, pogies are always easy to catch this time of year though

Is this worth the trouble to do this or just load it up and take to dump one day

I've eaten seven+ year old caribou and moose from the freezer and it was just fine. Double-wrapped in cling wrap, then a layer of butcher paper. I guess if you have ready access to more game meat there's no real point in hoarding it, though.

But to the actual question: I have used caribou liver as shark bait. Seemed to work as well as frozen anchovies and freezer burned kawakawa for sevengills. It was a bait medley kind of day.

It may not be legal, but I’ve heard of it being done often.

The common wisdom is to never use mamal meat or blood when sharking. You don't want them developing a taste for it. Yes, seals are mammals, but not all sharks target them.

As a mammal, I can appreciate this argument.

Keeping the burger on a hook might be challenging.

LOL

Have some old roasts as well , thinking of the burger for chum . Maybe mix with oatmeal or something

However in all honesty probably more trouble than it will be worth.

wait, just so I'm clear, he's going to use 4 year old deer meat, all cut up, as bait/chum, and sharks are going to like this stuff so much AND do the math that the taste is a mammal (how?) AND recognize that humans are also mammals AND then go 'looking' for humans...to eat. ummm no.

These guys know! If you were closer I would trade equal weight chum/bait for venison!

It might not be steak quality anymore, but as long as it was properly packed and frozen, it's not ruined!!
