Default Montauk Mahi fishing recommendation

Hi all,

Heading to montauk for about 2 weeks. Typically do mostly inshore fishing and some short range shark fishing about 8-10 miles south of the montauk lighthouse. Iíll head south until I get to about 160-180 feet of water or if I see any see life, whales for example. Typically catch sharks 50% of the time but only blues, never a mako or thresher.

I wanted to try some mahi fishing on this trip but was wondering if Iíd be wasting my time mahi fishing 8-10 miles off the lighthouse. Thereís a ton of lobster pots a few miles south around Cartwright but thatís way to close, right? Iíve never seen any pots in that 8-10 mile range to try my luck with mahi.

Any thoughts?

too close.

re: your short range sharking - try the Butterfish hole if your boat is capable. I fished Montauk for 30 years and never caught a mahi inside of 40 miles from shore

We donít like going much further than that. 25 ft boat with single 4 stroke. If we had twins we would go much further but donít feel comfortable with the single pin.

Not sure about Montauk, but I'm not too far south of you and in late July to mid sept they can be caught here 5-10 miles out. In August a lot of people fishing the wrecks for flounder will catch them. Hell, they've even been caught here by guys fishing in Indian River Inlet.

It all depends on water temp and clarity. If you can find warm water -- low 70s and bluish water -- try the pots whatever the distance south of Montauk. We've caught many mahi while cod fishing on Cox's Ledge about 25 SE of Montauk, and indeed, on the way to Cox's. You can catch peanuts within 10 miles of the Point if the water is warm and clear.
