Funny, but back when I owned a charter boat mates got paid out of the charter money. Tips were considered a bonus.

Put it right next to the head sticker that says only put things in this head that you have put in your mouth first.

The results will be the same!

Develop an app that has it, they might actually see it.

Typical in So Fla is mates get 10% of trip fee, captain gets 20% and they split the tips and half the commission of the mounts

I guess the mates should consider themselves lucky they don't have to pay for the sign...

exactly! Human greed has reached every industry.
id personally never charter a boat that had that sticker. If I was a mate I’d tell Captain YOU wash the boat I don’t work for you.

Remember back when when tips were EARNED???
For good service?
Now it pretty much pay the captain and the mate.

Love be to see everyone STOP giving ANY tips. Service would improve as mates/captains would behave differently.

Tips are for service above and beyond NOT a given.

well I guess we could include mate pay into cost of charter. What do you think a mate should make?

I'm guessing on the date but approximately 92-94 went to hatteras to fish for giants & got blown out & all boats were booked the next day so we ended up chartering a boat out of OI for yft I can't remember the boat name but the captain was Ommie Tillet & we had a good trip got 8-9 yft the biggest around 80# but the mate was the biggest jerk. we could not touch a bait or rod or anything execep to sit in the chair & reel . he didn't even want you out the cabin unless it was your time to reel... at the end of the trip I gave him a dollar & informed him that I could sit in my living room & turn a reel handle figured 1$ was worse than 0. so yes I agree tips should be earned & not expected

Last time I went out on a charter boat I was invited by some friends. The mate sucked. After fishing for real fish for a few hours we went in on a wreck and caught a half dozen amberjacks. The mate was mostly hand lining them and yelling at the poor fisherman "cranker", reel, reel! I was disgusted. Never offered any fish to the customers and seemed offended that I asked for a couple of shoulders. You'd have thought we were on a commercial fishing boat.

Well, since I was a guest I volunteered to pay the tip and gave the captain 15% which I personally thought was more than enough. He immediately went to the guy that chartered and beat him down for another 5%. Wasn't going to accept less. Last time ever on a charter boat.

The boat is a regular out of Sailfish Marina. Not to mention which boat but the captains name is John ______________. Just to narrow it down for you.

Don't charter often, but last time I did, I was glad to see a sign n the cockpit indicating what the tipping policy is.
Every charter should have it displayed.

What are they getting these days? $800 or $900 for a half day charter. If the mate gets 20% he's fairly well paid for a half day of fishing.

And they want another 20% of the total cost to split between the captain and mate? Come on!

The decks all day long
And follow his orders
Right or wrong

Checking the stores
Prepping and washing
There are endless chores

So when morning comes
And your mind is gone
You'll say to yourself
"I should have held on".

In the 80's and 90's I worked as a mate on several boats. All the boats I worked on were owner operated. I got between $75 to $100 / day from the Capt./Owner and whatever tip the customer gave me. I don't think I ever got a tip less than 10% and most times it was 20% or more. The Capt./Owners all told me that if I ever got stiffed, they would make it up to 10 % of the trip and they would never book that group again. never happened.

I always busted my butt, as did the captains. fishing wasn't always great, but we always had a great time. One boat that I worked did charters related to the captains full time building business, he had the same guys out year after year. One of them brought along "Herman the German." He owned a Boar's Head route and showed up with half a dozen hams and wheels of cheese. those were part of the tip as well. Another guy always brought a friend and 2 hot girls. he had food catered in for the trip. Huge platters of shrimp and gourmet sandwiches, etc. those were great times - I wish I could turn back the clock

You get a better class of Mate when they know they have to be a people person to get paid. They are your direct contact to the customer on the boat, They create the whole mood of the charter. If they know there pocket lining is reflected by there performance they give more. So I guess we could just charge more up front and then have you still dipping in your pocket for your fish being cleaned and all that. The guys i use work hard for there money and the moment the customers don't tip they never rebook with me. But in hindsight I got the sticker covered and thanks for the feed back. If I was on some rich owners tax right off charter boat and getting a salary for myself and the mate there wouldn't be a sticker but neither me or my mates need to do this for a living and that is why I offer low price charters because it is strickly fun and just a way to make the boat pay all it's own bills and sometimes just a little icing on top.
