Default Stand up harness, Which one?

Who make the nicest fighting belt and harness for fishing 50lb class rods? I love Aftco products but we do not have a store nearby that has any in stock and I would like to touch and feel it.

What say the Braintrust.,

Braid harness (what goes around your waist) use to be light years ahead of black magics. I see BM have upgraded! The problem with black magic is time it takes to put on! You have to put on the plate and it's harness, then the harness itself. SO it's twice as much as all others.

That being said Black Maic belt (the plate) is exceptional. The butt of the rod fits into the plate and is held in place. With every other plate the rod butt is susceptible to popping out. FYI this happens when you move your legs forward or backward and the plate changes angles. Instead of being exactly 90 degrees to rod it shifts as you wiggle.

I use a Alutecnos plate with the braid Bucket harness. The Alutecnos plate is one of the best. It is a large aluminum plate with a true gimbal mount for the rod. It also has great padding on the back. The braid bucket harness is the most comfortable to me. What ever you do learn to use it right. I have seem so many shows and people using them the wrong way. The where the harness like a woman's corset which is totally the wrong way to use a harness.

A few pics of our setups. Seth likes the Black magic harness with the Alutecnos plate and I like the braid with the Alutecnos plate. Either way we both prefer the Alutecnos plate for big fish.

To do things correctly every boat should have a light belt/ plate a medium plate and matching harness and a heavy plate / matching harness

Plate:
Braid: Don't get a Braid Plate I have one and have used on other boats they suck the rod can pop out of the plate.
Alutecnos has a cup that swivels up and down that is much better than the Braid this stops the rod from popping out
Black Magic: I have this plate it's great, they have a slot that you put the but into and won't let it pop out and becuse the slot is between you legs give you a better mechanical advantage than other plates. Only issue if your rod has a very short but or you use small bent buts the slot will have the reel too low or you can't get a full pump up because of the slot.

Belt/ Harness:
This is really a personal thing for heavy I have an OTR harness from Melton that I use with the Black Magic or something similar to Alutecnos. I love the OTR and highly recommend it I've caught tuna up to 300 LBS and Swords to 275 with no back pain at all but it's not something you want to put on while the fish is screaming you need to know how to use it and set it up correctly. We also have a lighter harness as well from a company that no longer makes them called Reliable.

Also heard Smitty makes a good harness. Used it once with Renegade Mike.

Thanks for the responses. I do like the gimbal on the Alutecnos. I'll look into that and the Black Magic.

Default Alutecnos

I love my Alutecnos Pro harness and belt. It takes 10 minutes to set up but its works perfect. Lots of adjustment and the swiveling gimbal is best on class.

Have used a few over the years on some heavy fish both billfish and deep dropping. I really like the Black Magic plate as it feels so secure and works with an easy 'pumping' action. I use the BM harness as well and like that, but have a couple of others that are pretty good as well.

I use Smitty's spyder harness and big plate , you can wear the harness all day if you wanted to , and just snap the plate on . I put it on when it's my turn in rotation , makes things so much easier when you are on the rod and someone hands you the plate . We have the black magic systems on the boat too , but it is a PITA getting people setup in them when they are on a fish . First putting the harness belt on , then the other belt with the plate , and the reel clips usually end up going the wrong way through the harness . Also with the padding the straps have a tendency to slide around and not be where you want them . It's still a good belt , but the plate is a little small to my liking , especially moving side to side while on a fish .

I tried the Smitty system a few years ago , and ordered one as soon as I got back home . Surprised more people don't use them on the east coast , they are big on the west coast with all the long range tuna guys
