Default New to LI/NJ Offshore Trolling Spreader Bars?

Hey All,

New on this forum and new to offshore fishing. Coming out of western Long Island (Debs and Jones Inlet). Looking for some advice on the right spread bars to run. Like the Sterlings and seems they have alot of positive feedback (chatter is just too much money compared to them). Are there pros and cons to the Machines and Squids? Same question on the 6" vs 9". I won't be running riggers on the boats but looking to get 7 rods out there with Shutes, Plugs, or Daisy Chains in close.

I have been told to run Green Machines and Purple Squid with Green Stingers, but Any tips or pointers on colors to run or spread ideas is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Get the 6 inch WT models. The squids are usually better if it’s calmer and the machines when it’s rougher but that is a very general statement. If it’s very windy and choppy the lighter lures jump all over the place, the machines are a little heavier, run a little deeper. Just a starting point. Get some dark colors and some light bright colors. Also get a few chains. The crazy 8 is tough to beat. Mix in a few ballyhoos on joe shutes and you are all set.

Call Sterling and get Steve on the phone. He will hook you up with a great deal on a starter set up. Lots of us don’t even carry any other bars but Sterlings on the boat anymore.

6 Wide Trackers. Pair of purple black with zucchini stingers, and the rest an assortment of zucchini, pink tiger, white pearl and glow. Add a pair of machine WTs if you want in purple with zucchini.

4 crazy 8s. Purple, zucchini, white pearl, and pink tiger

3 Chaos Bars. Purple, Zucchini, Glow

Of course you should have an assortment of 3oz and 5oz hoo heads as well as some light Sea Witch heads. These can pull both ballyhoo and RonZ

A very simple spread would be WTs on the outside long rigger, crazy 8s off short rigger, shotgun WTs off rod tips, Chaos up the middle about 30' behind the crazy 8s.

Same as above and I like the 9" squid wide trackers or try the new crazy six wide trackers.

Thank you everyone. I actually spoke to steve today and all I can say is wow what a great guy. Spent 15 minutes talking me through all the options the pro's and con's of the various colors and ways to set up the spread. Sterling is sold out of Green and Purple Black but I started with a pair of Zuc 18" Crazy 6 WT, Zuc Crazy 8 Chain, Joe Heavy Chain Purple. Will Add the Purple/Black with the Zucchini Stingers when they are back in stock. Very appreciative of the quick feedback everyone. Weekend is looking nice in the Atlantic, Goodluck Boys

Call back and order 2 Chaos Bars please. There have been tough bites at the canyon where the only thing I could do to get a bit was pull a Chaos Bar way out the back on the center rigger.

Get me 2 Johnny Utah!!!!!!

I would add a small mini jet bar to your mix. I’ve had great success on inshore BFT’s on smaller profile spreaders when the fish are feeding on sand eels or smaller baitfish.

Purple and black & Blue & white

They work just as well as anything else. The only issue is if there are white marlin around they will be all over it. Not necessarily a bad thing unless you aren't targeting white marlin. Having said that, they even work good for them.

IMHO
I have to agree with just about everything said about Sterling Tackle
Bars, chains, rigged Shutes, stingers, you can't go wrong
Well made stuff

For the wide trackers, I like Chatters. They seem sturdier and can be set to run either side
I also think they right themselves better in choppy seas

I don't like running them alone in the long rigger. It makes too much of a gap between them and the short rigger
Better to double clip the long rigger and run a W/T outside, then a chain or Shute with meat on the inside long rigger
I think it keeps the spread more symmetrical

I am going to give this weekend a whirl first time running off LI see if I can find a BFT. Have the Green Chatters and my Zuchini WT's ready to compare them against each other along with Crazy 8, Joe Heavy Chain and Joe Shutes. Still waiting on the Purple/Zuc Stinger 36" WT's to come in. Thanks for all the advice on this hope to have some good catches to report back next week.
