I am in Auckland New Zealand. Took some friends away for the weekend that hadn't deep dropped before. Fish is a Hapuka or NZ Groper. Got 5 of those and some large Gemfish which are great eating.

Check out the teeth. I might have done a little dental work getting the hook out but they are still impressive. Our local barracouta look almost identical but nasty eating. Always woder how many people throw away great eating gemfish mistaking them for barracouta. Will have to google up a walleye pic to compare.

We were pulling Gemfish out of 1000ft earlier this year in a different location. Pic above is frpm 1000ft. Good shot of the teeth. Trying for a different fish and they were lkke a plague. Just as well they taste good. We deep drop down to around 1500ft at times and deeper for broadbill, but 600ft is usually a good depth for the Groper we wete after this last trip. Some of these from 1000ft slso.

Great pics! What kind of rig and weights do you use? Bait or lures?

300lb leaders with 2 or 3 droppers. Large circle hooks with big baits. Usually large pieces of skip Jack tuna, large squid, live or dead Jack mackerel. Between 20 and 32oz sinkers depending on the drift. 50w reel, 80lb braid and a bent butt rod.

No. Just take a few concrete pills. I like electric reels but there is more satisfaction in doing the hard yards. Will probably look to pull out the electric in some of the real deep stuff though yo be fair.
