Default Billy bait and the like

HI All,
I have had good luck catching with billy baits but the newer ones seem to fall apart pretty quick, So I thought I would try something different, and cheaper brand (Bass pro catties them) for that matter. Tuna Turbo, Well just like the billy baits they do not last, but they do catch. Anybody have a similar lure that holds up or ideas on how to make these things last. My last Tuna turbo lasted 1 hour and 1 fish, Not a single strand of mylar left That said it was a cude, but it was lip hooked and likely only hit the mylar before he was hooked.

I would expect some loss of mylar from a toothy like that. But not 100% loss

Are these the fine flashbou type or the thick mylar like Mr big?

I looked em up. what I usually do in the winter or when I can't fish is take some good thread and tie the flashbou. Normally it's the rubber band that holds it on there that rots. Might be able to use monel wire too, never tried that. I've used an oetiker clamp on some lures I've put hair on.

Thats exactly what happens. I do as the last poster, over wrap the rubber bands with monel rigging wire. Same with SeaWitches. Makes them last much longer.

Clamp or wrap with stainless wire / monel out of the box. Problem solved.

As soon as the Mylar falls off, I glue two small rubber skirts on it just like I am reskirting a bigger marlin lure. I like them better with the skirts than the flashy mylar.

The new Billy Baits don't last nothing like the originals. They do catch like crazy though.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve had the same issue. Monel seems like a good solution. I generally troll mine with a small bonita strip. Not sure if it’s necessary. Anyone else use bonita strips or just run them “naked”?

Almost always with a bonita strip.

I have had better quality from the ebay (almost alive lures) than the current Billy Bait. Sudden strike fishing use to sell a slightly larger version as well and those also hold up really well. After the sale from the original owners the quality/durability of Billy Baits has gone way down.

Waxed rigging thread is the best thing to use. It seals to itself. That's what sea witches are tied with, and the same thing that is used with various dead bait rigs.

I tie my witches with waxed floss. Then over wrap that with a couple wraps of monel to keep the toothy guys from the floss. Witches with strips Billys plain.

I have put skirts on the bullet heads but I feel the bite is much better with the mylar. Kind of sucks that I have to take the lure out of the package and add/tie the skirt on better. But I guess that is the best solution. But if they will last longer it will be worth the effort.

Thanks for the tips/recommendations.
