Default planned obsolescence -garmin

i have had many garmin products quit working. they tell me to ,"do the update". and of course, that never fixes it and they send me a rebuilt unit that i pay for. does their software just time out or expire? apple is facing a similar situation w/ iphones and a class action suit was filed. somebody plz explain...?

I for one will be leaving the garmin family next time a new set of electronics are bought. My lightly used and kept out of weather 7610 had a touchscreen issue from almost the get go (maybe 6-12 months after install) after being told to update it, again and again, it totally stopped working. Garmin says... Hmmm refurb time. send us $1000.00.

Also the whole map debacle just adds to the insult. I have been playing with a Simrad on a friends boat. I think they may be the route to go.

They wanted even more $$ to fix a older radar unit. The refurb prices are above what they would pay to make a new unit. That is called being a crook if you ask me.

I believe someone just posted a similar thread and the general consensus was that Simrad was in everyone's future.

Don't be silly. Garmin isn't intentionally bricking your electronics. Look, I'll hold them to task when they annoy me (almost, but not quite daily ). But I think that's being unfair.

Sure, they lag the curve with their hw designs, and that leads to cases where some updates stress out their designs. But I really don't see any evidence they are building in time bombs or even slowing down older units.

That said, they could certainly do a better job in design to future proof current units. Don't design to 2018 standards in 2019 and finally start shipping in 2021. Take a page from pc designers. Stay cutting edge and design for 4 years from now. More expensive? Sure, but these units are very high priced; the margin has to be there.

In any case, this sounds like a competitor inspired conspiracy theory. Just mho.

It's nice to see more people awakening to see the light. I've always thought Garmin had a cult-like following much like Shimano and Apple. I walked away from Garmin 10 or so years ago when their update broke my GPA map. You'll never guess what they told me... "UPDATE TO THE LATEST VERSION..."

I cut ties with Garmin about nine years ago. I had a two year old unit that quit starting up (I am known amongst my fellow anglers as taking meticulous care of all my equipment, to the point that it annoys people). I called customer service and waited forever as usual, only to be told that I should be happy with getting two years out of the unit. I said thatís fine then Garmin can be happy with losing my business forever and me sharing my story with others for the foreseeable future. Based on my observation Garmin is more interested in selling units to companyís that equip/sell boats. So if you have a boat under warranty and your boat manufacturers/dealers representative behind you then they will replace their garbage product. If you bought your unit as an individual as a retail customer and something goes wrong then itís middle finger to you. I knew that it was only a matter of time before this started catching up to them, and it is unfolding as evidence on tht right now in this thread and many others. Furuno and simrad/ lowrance have been stand up companies for me, buyer be ware of Garmin.

highflyer, that is XACTLY WHAT HAPPENED 2 ME! you should NEVER have 2 do an,"update", unless there is a new added feature. the current version should work UNLESS... they have built time limits the internal software (which they+apple) most likely have done).

My feeling is they can all be a little quirky and glitchy..It's just a matter of getting a good unit.

Actuallly software can fix issues, I am a software guy. But there was nothing in update notes that says it fixes the TS. then they say oh we jerked u around for so long you are not in warranty any more. Then warrenty really is about how bad can we screw u. with $$$$$$

This is a lot like saying american/united/delta/southwest sucks because they lost your bag and were rude to you. Everyone hates an airline. But they are hated more or less equally, just by different people.

I for example will never buy another apple product. Not because of the recent crap where they intentionally slowed down older units (that is criminal btw), but because of their support policies. Why should I have to go into a "genius bar" to get a product fixed or diagnosed?

Anyway, everyone has a favorite company to hate. Sometimes it's well founded, sometimes it's personal. But rest assured, there are people who hate furuno or simrad as well.

Where else would you take an electronics product (Apple goes to Apple place, Garmin goes to Garmin place, etc) to get fixed, besides factory trained facility?

Do you only take your car to a dealership for service? Outside of warranty repairs? If so, I want your money.

Electronics aren't magical, and they aren't difficult to diagnose and fix. Just as with a car, you shouldn't be required to go the manufacturer for repairs. Hardware is easy to fix. Software and firmware is a different beast.

As far as "planed obsolescence", it's more commonly known as "Moore's Law". Technology moves fast now-a-days. Improvements come quick.

Pay to play if you want the latest and greatest or live with the "old" technology. Companies not supporting older equipment sucks, but it's part of life in this fast paced world.

In apples case, you can't talk to someone on the phone, you can't send send a product in for service. You can't even drop it off at an apple store. You have to make an appointment and talk to some kid who took a few days of training and gets to ask the wizard in the back room once you've explained the problem.

It takes 3 hours out of my day to do this. I'd rather buy a different brand and go about my life.

Exactly right, I used to mate on various commercial boats, they all use furuno because they last forever. They donít mess with garbage like Garmin. The only commercial fisherman using Garmin are captains that are also charter fishing and more than likely have some sort of sponsorship relationship with them where they replace their shitty products on a regular basis for advertising purposes.

Why don't the manufacturers just put out a unit w/ software that is tested to work with currently available add ons(Tranducers,Radar,XM Weather ect...) End of story !! Then if something new and exciting is developed introduce that and charge more for the upgrade. Then the existing units we own will work and if we want to upgrade, it becomes a financial decision for the upgrade. I think back to fishing long before any of these electronics were available and we caught lots of fish...jmho
