harpoon line

How long should the line on a harpoon dart be? How strong?

Nicknotsebastian 05-04-2019 11:13 AM

we use 100' 3/8" line with an A-1 Polyball

Depends what your harpooning? GBFT anywhere from 100-300ft is probably the most common. But i know TUNA.COM uses close to a 1000 feet of line.

For swords the rec is 1000 feet of 1/8 poly. You don't want to hold line that thin on the way out, just let it run out of the bucket. NEVER cleat off a dart and especially not a flying gaff. Let the ball do it's work and wear the fish down. Add a light if the fight can go into dark.

I've heard stories where a fish took two harpoon darts with 1000 feet of line and poly balls under for longer than the crew expected.

1200í of 3/16 poly rope , I just got into Swordfishing havenít got a chance to use it but hopefully it works . Itís set up if the fish takes the whole basket full of line just clip the ball onto loop coming out the bottom of the basket and throw the ball and basket in , I added a glow stick to the ball and clip to the end of the ball rope .

250' of 3/8" poly with a Gloucester ball on the end. And never tie off to the boat. If theyre running hard, you'll rip the dart right out.

First, great points by Gerg IMHO (We have experienced the 2 dart scenario)

Re: Swordfish
We have at least 1000ft of paracord (no heavy rope anywhere).
Just a suggestion:
Have your ball already connected. When all hell is breaking loose you don't want to be holding, let alone, messing with the rope or clip. Also, just as FYI, we had a strobe light on the ball. Much easier to see at night. Further, and I realize I may sound like grandpa, but be very diligent to know where people are, their feet and darts/ropes. Have an orchestrated plan.

On an aside from previous mention. To quote many, bad things happen with swords and cleats.

Thanks for the advice TB! , yea it would make sense to go ahead and clip the ball on just to be safe . We had a little test run last weekend , had what we thought was ole big girl on , 1700í off the bottom day drop , 2 1/2 hours later brought a shark up . We had everything laid out , rope clear of feet , basket to the side , dart in hand , 2 gaffs close by . Didnít get to pull the trigger tho. We were ready ( I think )
