Note from admin: beware of PM scammers

Hello all,

It's an unfortunate side effect of being such a large popular site that we attract scammers. Over the past few weeks, THT, like many other forums, has seen its share of scammers attempting to take advantage of our community's close-knit nature. This has involved:

*Sending Private Messages (PMs) from brand new accounts, soliciting items for sale
*Sending PMs from existing, hacked user accounts
*Insisting via PM or email that buyers use "Friends and Family" payments on PayPal (this has no buyer protection)

Where possible, we have banned the new accounts attempting to scam our members, as well as retroactively deleted all PMs sent from those accounts.

We have also reacted swiftly in alerting existing account holders that their THT accounts have been hacked and used as shill accounts for scammers; in these cases, we believe the usernames and passwords have come from large data dumps made public from hacks of user information from other sites.

1. If you are using a username and password that you are also using elsewhere in the Internet, change your password to a new, secure one that is unique to THT; do this by going to UserCP, Edit Email & Password, and following the prompts.

2. If you are solicited to purchase something via PM, as everywhere on THT, *buyer beware*. Use your best judgment, and try to verify if the user is on the up-and-up before sending any money; do not pay "friends and family" as you will not be able to easily recover money scammed; where possible use a credit card and never cash. If the member is not familiar to you, you may insist on delivery of the item before payment. Use the "smell test" - does the deal sound too good to be true? It probably is. Is the seller a little too motivated or eager to accept a lowball offer? Watch out. As ever, THT does not get involved in payment disputes under any circumstances -- they are strictly between the buyer and seller.

We will continue to monitor the situation and act as necessary to protect our members.
