Talking Garmin Video Tutorials

Over the past several years I have invested a lot of time and gained a considerable amount of experience in real world use of Garmin's newest products especially the 7600xsv series and assorted transducers. I try to post screen shots and comments that provide value to others that are in the learning or selection mode in hopes of helping others get the results they are looking for. If there is interest in this I would like to produce some simple videos from a recreational user perspective that would better illustrate how to perform certain tasks that sometimes are difficult to pick up from just reading the manual.

Just to be completely forthcoming, the suggestion for doing this came from discussions I have had with Gil (Semperfifishing) who has been very gracious in providing me with some of Garmin's most recently released products to review and provide feedback for here on THT. Moving to a video review format will be somewhat new to me and I fully expect some growing pains in learning to produce these with the hopes of them being more informational than comical to watch.

With all that said I would greatly appreciate some input from Garmin owners or potential owners on what they would like to see. I will do my best to get your requests filled as quickly as I can with weather and time permitting.

I'll be getting the 94sv with GT51 in a few weeks. Would love to see some real world offshore reef fish hunting over wrecks (or around platforms). Not just passing directly over the wreck, but off of it say 30-50 feet to see it come in on sidescan. There are usually some fish hanging out away from the wreck or rig. Would like to see if the 94sv picks up any fish and what we should be looking for when fish are further away. Quickdraw would be another good topic. Will quickdraw work with just the traditional sonar when on plane at higher speeds? Or does quickdraw mainly use sidescan to create the contours?

Quickdraw is best used at trolling speeds becase you will have the most accurate bottom readings etc.
The Panoptix give the overall best bottom contour capability with the traditional transducers the second best.

I have already shipped a good many of CHIRP 94sv and 74sv and the comments coming back on them are all postive..Ken (kmoose) is out today and will post his results shortly..

Below are screen shots the Garmin Striker 7sv with a 300 watt GT52HW transdcuer.. very good images..and the 600 watt GT51 with the echoMAP CHIRP will be even better.

Default 94sv Echomax Chirp Real World Review

Just got back in and had a great day on the water with the 94sv chirp unit and it did not disappoint. I did extensive testing of the unit with the GT52hw and with the GT 51. Both performed well and I really can't say one worked better than the other in the depths I was fishing today. The only bad news is that I had long runs with zero opportunities to troll around and did not get a chance to tape any use of the Quickdraw feature but I will get back out soon to gets some video of it working. That said the unit exceeded my expectations and performed very well against my 7610xsv.

Pros: The chirp, downvu and sideview functions exceptionally well and delivered excellent imagery. Engine data was good and worked perfectly. Navigation and plotter functions were seamless and perfect.

Cons: Not a touch screen. The buttons are well laid out and are intuitive but it was hard to go from the 7610xsv to buttons. There is just no comparison to how easy the 7600 series works and saves time through the setting and operation. The only other con is the video resolution compared to the 7610. Don't get me wrong, the 94sv has plenty of resolution but when you really zoom in the difference is quite noticeable.

So now for the pics. Sorry, no videos on this trip but I'm working on getting a stable set up for the camera for use offshore.

Ken or Gil, I just ordered the 94sv echomapCHIRP from Gil but I have a simple question. How do I get my waypoints off my old Garmin gpsMAP 498 to the new 94sv? The 498 has an SD card slot but the 94sv has a microSD slot. Is it as easy as storing the waypoints to a blank micro sd card with an sd adapter and then dumping them into the 94sv?

Dennis,
You will first need to save your user data on the 498 to a micro SD card in it's SD adaptor. Take the micro SD out of the adapter and place in the 94. The 94 should see the data on the card and place you in a menu to merge or copy the data to your machine.

I would like to see tips to set up a 7600 series to show a thermocline if possible. Thanks for offering this advice!

I would like to see how the 94sv works in shallow water. I fish in shallow bays never over 20ft. deep. Will the 94sv show structure and fish around bridges in 15'-18' of water? What will the screen look like? If I slowly move along a flat in 5'-10' will the sidevu show schools of speckled or white trout? Screen shots taken in shallow water would be very helpfull in helping me decide which sonar to get. Thank You.

I will see what I can do for that but I rarely see them where I am located. That said I have noticed them when running the gain up and you may also be able to achieve some level of success by selecting individual bands on the transducer instead of using the ducer in chirp mode.

Good news, I will be running the unit in the river this weekend and should be able to give you some feedback in shallower water.
