The GPSMAP 8612 010-02092-01 is a chartplotter only...no built in sonar
Whereas the GPSMAP 8612xsv 010-02092-03 has the full built in sonar.

Any Garmin unit that has an s, Xs or Xsv attached to it will have a built in sonar.
s..will have a standard Traditional sonar.
Xs will have Traditional and also Down Scan
Xsv will have Traditional, Down Scan and Side Scan.

Thanks, Gil. I have an 8212 with a GSD 25 and may replace it with an 8612.

Should I get an 8612 and hooked up to my GSD 25, or just get an 8612xsv? Is the built-in sounder better than the GSD 25?

The 8612xsv has additional sonar circuits that the GSD 25 does not.

It has the addition of UHD and Livescope built in....and upgrade over the GSD 25.

Gil,

Also looking to replace a 1040. Will the 1242xsv work with the older XM weather antenna? It is not on the list of compatible devices?

Hey Gil any of the Echomaps sold without transducer? Looking to use it as a backup plotter or possible radar display.

The current echoMAP units cannot use radar...and yes many are sold without a ducer.
