For trailering the height is under 13'6" from the ground to the tallest point. That gets you under normal bridges etc. while on the road. You still have to watch out for low tree limbs on streets...

I agree at 3/8" would likely be fine. I used 1/2" to create a dash panel but, it wasn't just an overlay. I moved the bottom of the dash out and it was only connected at the top sides and bottom.
