Granted, I would have glassed another piece of core on the inner transom prior to the knees.

yep thats not a bad repair, just put some glass on the inside, then bondo the outside, rattle can prime and then rattle can yamaha grey and just feather it out. It's gonna look great from a few feet...

mositure gets in the cylinders and then forms rust between the rings and sleeves. sometimes it's not bad and you never know, other times it wears out really quick and you loose compression.

I am not 100% sure for the engineering behind it, but it may have to do with getting trapped air out, but oil comes out of there when you have a bad upper bearing carrier o ring leak or seal leak.
