The impeller tines were likely lubricated with grease prior to insertion into the water pump. Even if they weren't, I can imagine that the impeller could be damaged by running dry for 45 seconds.

The top speed is in the low 40's. It performs very well in a chop up to 2 feet or so... beyond that you have to pace yourself.
