Evercaot slicksand is a polyester filler primer that flattens really well and sands nice you may like it. I use it on molds quite a bit.

You can use fiberglass tubing as well where you need to pass through a stringer, leave it about 1" long on both sides and pull a fillet around it then glass.

Seams excessive but this stuff does take a lot of time. With that considered I think 2-3 days to pull several layers of filler and fair then paint one day sand the next 2-3 times. Thats about 6-10...

I think the cause of the bubbles is the multiple coats 2 hours apart. If your using waxed gelcoat it should be left to cure completely then sanded and whipped with acetone before applying another...
