i would stick with the internal unit as it gives...

i would stick with the internal unit as it gives you side/downscan capability on certain transducers. The only time you probably want to go external unit is if you need/want the 2kw transducers

GPS refresh rate doesnt matter. The SOTDMA fastest refresh rate is every 5 seconds (B+ rate > 23knots). So refreshing the GPS data every 1 second, vs ever 1/10 or 1/5 isnt relevant on the AIS...
