I owned a 21í Larson with a VP I/O for 20 years. I operated it predominantly in salt water including the Chesapeake. I trailered the boat but on occasion would keep it in a slip (in fresh water)....

Quick update: I went by the Suzuki dealer and picked up a couple new fuel filters. I talked to the tech about it and his advice was the same; run the motor awhile and then check/change the filter.
