Default Scammers among us

There are scammers among us. I posted an add wanting to buy a Mercury Rev4 17 pitch prop. I was contacted buy Smith50 (Jeremy Dean) deanjeremy28@gmail.com. He put me in contact with bryon Betrin (bryonbetrin@gmail.com) I sent him 200.00 for a used rev4 that he sent me pictures of. Now no contact and no tracking number and no prop. After searching the internet 4 days later I found an add for the same prop with the same pictures from 2015. Also found a posted scam from a Toyota Celica page of a guy who got scammed. Yep you guessed it bryonbetrin@gmail.com. So guys please beware of these two. I'm hoping Pay Pal will refund my money but it was sent friends and family. Let's try to keep these undesirables out of our boating family.
Thanks
Joe

The common thread here seems to be WTB ads, not for sale ads. If you post a WTB ad, be cautious.

Taylor45 tried it here with me. Asked to send me a code to make sure I was real. Mind you, I was the one making the purchase... I him to go choke himself and get the F of the this page. days later I posted on this forum warning people about this scam. The mods had already deleted his account. I appears he has software to change his IP address and started a new account... They have to be able to track them down with IP addresses...

Anyone that is newly registered member, with some numbers at the end of the user name, and responds to your WTB listing......its the pattern

steven272 contacted me on an ad I posted looking for a lower unit saying that taylor00128@gmail.com had one in NY. steven272 had no posts and joined in Oct 2020. I played along, and sure enough taylor00128@gmail.com had one for sale for $500, suspicious I asked for pictures which he promptly sent (wrong gear case btw) and in the email he asked how I would like to pay. I told him I would pick it up since he was in Manhattan it's only a 30 min drive from me. He didn't want that, said he would only ship. The lower unit I needed for $ 500 shipped was a good deal, so I asked for his wire instructions; account and routing number.

I told him to expect a wire from my bank: First Republic Bank of Nigeria. He was annoyed when he realized that I knew he was a scammer.

low or no post counts: Beware
lack of knowledge of product they are selling: Beware
unrealistically low price (no shipping cost for a heavy bulky lower) Beware
Insistence on friends and family payment for high dollar transaction: Move on its a scam

If you really want the item and the seller won't do regular Paypal invoice offer to pay the 3% to cover the sellers paypal transaction cost. If they wont agree to this move on.

I have bought several items from members here, I always read a sampling of their posts to get a feel for who I am dealing with.

Single name followed by numbers are generally scammers. Never do friends and family.

No doubt my own fault for not paying attention. Best lessons learned are the ones that hurt you some how. You can best believe this will not be something I fall for again. Heaven forbid people got a honest job instead of scamming good hard working people out of their money.

That’s why I never do the Friends and Family unless they are truly Friends and Family. If seller insists on F & F, I just add the 3% and do it the safe way.

Agreed. 3% is a small price to pay. I also suggest to the seller we split the cost. Any hesitation and I call off the deal.

never send friends and family. No matter what excuse the seller gives, not worth the hassle. That should be an automatic red flag.

We should start fake WTB ads to waste their time so they cant get on real consumers. Try and string them along as long as possible.
