Any idea if the 8212 is the same cutout as the 7212? Assume these need a sounder box?

it depends really. i replaced a 7212 in my yellowfin years ago with an 8212 no problem. it was tight, but just barely covered the old holes. if the 7212 install was a mess, it may not work.
the 7212 flush mount holes are on about a 9.3" x 12.5" footprint, and the 8212 covers a 9.7" x 13.1" area.

I'll have to look behind the dash to find out how good or bad the install was. Anyone know the advantages the 8212 has over the 7212?

The 8212 is just a MFD. You'll need a transducer and a black box for depth, etc... Also the 8212 utilizes a external card reader.
I run an 8212.......
