Default 2019 South of the Vineyard Buddy Boat thread

Well, it's April. I guess that is close enough. History tells us that the fish should arrive south of the Vineyard sometime in June, so that gives us two months to get the boats in the water, get all the gear up to snuff, and form our circle of buddies and buddy boats that we can work with during the season.

If this is your first time participating on this thread, here is what it is all about. The people who participate on this thread all fish (or would like to fish) in the waters south of Nantucket to the east, the eastern edge of Long Island to the west, with Martha's Vineyard and Block Island right in the middle. We cover the water to the south of those islands, all the way to the Canyons, but many of us are more interested in the flats from the Claw to the north and the Lanes to the south. But anyone fishing this vast area is welcome to join in.

The main idea is to use this thread to find buddies who will be out there fishing when you are planning to go out. It is a lot of water to cover and it is nice to know there are other people out there that you can stay in touch with during the day. You can just post up here and tell us where and when you are going and ask who else will be out there. On the water, we usually communicate on channel 68, 69, 71, and 72. I've tried to come up with one channel every year, but everyone has their own favorite. Over the years, we have become more sophisticated. One of our participants has created a What's App group and I hope he will keep it going this year as well. And you are all free to use the information here to reach out to people by PM and just form your own group communicating by phone, e-mail or whatever you like.

You can also use this thread to find crew to go out with you, or boats to serve on for a day if you need or want a ride. I leave it up to all of you to make your own financial arrangements. Some guys split the costs, some guys divide up the responsibilities. Whatever works for you.

Almost as important, this thread becomes a place to post your catch reports and give other participants an idea of where the fish are, where they are not, what worked, and what didn't. No one has to give numbers (you can if you want), but the idea is NOT to be a dink who just posts pictures of their catch. If all you want to do is show off, start your own thread. If you are going to post about your catch, please give the general area (ie The Claw, Coxes Ledge, Northeast corner, the Horns, etc.) The time of day that they were biting, and what you were using.

A third purpose for this thread is to ask advice from some VERY knowledgeable and experienced fishermen who have been fishing these waters for decades. I thank in advance all of the people who graciously share their wisdom and experience with the rest of us. I have learned a lot form them and I hope they will continue to mentor this group.

So that's about it. To get started, you can just introduce yourself, tell us the name and size of your boat, and where you fish out of. From time to time, I'll try to do some organizing and everyone is welcome to participate in whatever I post on here.

So may your spring commissioning be thorough, fast and inexpensive .

Tight Lines to all of us!

My name is Bill. I fish out of Falmouth, MA. I'll be out there in a 30" Grady-White Bimini named Business Interruption. I usually need crew. Hail me on 68 and then switch to 71. Feel free to PM me.

I generally dont share Intel, as I dont usually need it in return.

That said, as for "Buddy Boating" I'm more likely than most to bail your ass out of a jam. I carry a world class first aid kit, a AED defibrillator on board, and I'm trained to use them and wont hesitate to run to a vessel in need. I've also towed boats home from the bottom of the shipping lanes.

There is ALOT more than just where the fish are when it comes to running offshore. 🤨

I thought I'd try making a list of the people who respond to this based on their port locations. that way if any of you want to reach out to folks near you, you can find them here without going through the entire thread. I make NO PROMISE that I will keep this post up to date.

Soon enough Bill,

Im John, mostly crew hop and jump on others boats since I am 26 and do not own a boat (father owns a 32 Regulator). Mostly fish out of Rhode Island, always willing to hop on a boat and help crew. Carry my own weight in gear, bait, ice, food and fuel. Feel free to reach out if you are short a crew member, plenty of captains can vouch for me

Hi - Paul here. We boat out of east Falmouth (Childs River). I think I can pretty confidently say I'm the worst fisherman on this note if not the entire forum but I find it interesting and will be attempting to up my equipment and my game. We mostly cruise and occasionally fish. We tend to be out every weekend in the summer just not fishing.

I use a 40 Riviera flybridge for offshore-ish fishing - went to the Star once and caught a small Mako with a lot of help. Somewhere in here I think I have a thread about that trip. We use a 18.5 foot center console (Edgewater) for fishing in the Vineyard and Nantucket sound Buzzards bay and more locally.

I'll mostly be lurking.

Thanks,

Fingers crossed for a better south of the Vineyard season this year. The Mahi and white marlin were fun, but nothing like tuna. The big eye were a blast too, but FAR. Hopefully the medium bluefin take up residency inside for a while this year. They never left the damn Coimbra last year!

Al Here.

I fish out of Chatham and head SofMV early in the season and East of Chatham as the bite moves. I hope we get some better fish south as well! The bluefin bite has been slow the last few seasons there. I have a Bluewater 2550 CC

You may have a challenger for the "worst fisherman" title this year...I'll be getting my first boat in the next couple weeks and starting fishing again after a 20+ year hiatus.

Bill, thanks for doing this again.

Although I am out of Scituate currently and fish East, I will move the boat to the south side at some point, Falmouth, New Bedford or PJ. On some waiting lists. Have a transient slip for some time in June and July. Will also trailer when possible. Have plenty of gear, willing to contribute, and very willing to crew when needed. Looking to begin networking with some of you that fish south. I really have a fishing problem! Thanks, Andrew

34 Seavee "Tailwalker" out of Harwich Port, Ma. Mainly fish East of Chatham but if the bluefin show South of the Vineyard I will be making runs down there as well. Toying with idea of canyons runs if the inshore bite stays cold like the beginning of last season.

John (Newbie) here out of Milford, CT. Just upgraded from a Sailfish 275DC to a Pursuit 325OS. My intention is to get off/near shore three or four times this year but only comfortable about 30 miles off Montauk for now ( I guess that would be around the 30 line)?. Had one trip planned last year but the weather cancelled it (I am a fair weather boater). Spent lots of time and money last year investing in all the safety equipment, some relatively new gear, and sterling tackle to put to use so I will be watching this thread closely. If I do manage to get lucky I will definitely share location, condition, and strategy used! Thanks for putting this thread together and thanks in advance for tolerating the many newbie questions I will be asking!

I sold my boat in October but I’ll be fishing on other boats this summer so I should be able to post some reports.
